Box Score

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - The Providence College volleyball team picked up a dramatic five-set victory (25-18, 21-25, 25-16, 21-25, 15-10) over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday to improve its record to 6-10 on the season.

The Friars were led by junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), who notched 20 kills in the match while hitting at an impressive .514 clip. Fletcher also picked up three aces and five blocks. Classmate Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) added 15 kills on the match. Senior co-captain Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) flirted with a double-double, as she led the Friars with 13 digs and picked up nine kills. Junior Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) added nine kills while sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) picked up 10 digs. Junior setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) picked up 45 assists in the match.

Bethune-Cookman placed three in double-figures for kills. Janeen Davis led the way with 16 kills, while Krysta Gardner added 12 and Linda Nwabuko notched 10. Alexis Bliese registered 35 assists, while Jacqueline Goodyear paced the Wildcat defense with 15 digs.

The Friars fell down 2-0 in the first set, but quickly responded for a 3-2 lead and would not trail again in the frame. Providence notched 12 kills in the set, while hitting at a .478 pace as a team. Fletcher picked up seven kills on only nine attacks, good for a .778 hitting percentage, leading the Friars to a 25-18 opening-set win.

The second set saw Bethune-Cookman lead the entire way, as Davis was almost as good as Fletcher was in the first for the Wildcats, nothing six kills while hitting .667. Bethune-Cookman hit .459 as a team and evened the match with a 25-21 win.

The third set saw five early ties, but freshman Emily Hall (Canal Winchester, Ohio) helped the Friars pull away with four service aces on the match, including three in a row to take the Providence lead from 21-15 to 24-15 before a Hendel kill sealed the set with a 25-16 win.

The fourth set proved to be the most dramatic, featuring ten ties and five lead changes. After leading 17-14, the Friars just could not overcome the six attack errors in the set and two late time outs by Friar Head Coach Margot Royer-Johnson could not stem the tide as the Wildcats forced a fifth set with a 25-21 win.

The deciding set never saw the Friars trail, jumping out to a 3-0 lead on the service game of Muzzonigro. After Bethune-Cookman got back within a point at 7-6, Fletcher recorded a kill and an ace to get the Friars up 9-6 and they never looked back, taking the set and the match 15-10.

Providence returns to the court on Wednesday, September 22, when they travel to Hamden, Conn., for a showdown with Quinnipiac. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
