Friar Volleyball Closes Homestand With Manhattan College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team (4-8, 0-0) returns to the court on Tuesday, September 14, when it plays host to the Jaspers of Manhattan College (3-5, 0-0). The match is set for 7:00 p.m. at Mullaney Gymnasium.

Head coach Margot Royer-Johnson's team is coming off a weekend that saw it win all three matches at the seventh annual Friar Classic. Providence did not drop a set in the tournament, sweeping St. Francis (N.Y.), Coppin State and Fairleigh Dickinson. The wins improved the Friars to 4-0 at home on the season.

Junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) leads the squad with 3.91 kills per set. The middle blocker was named MVP of the Friar Classic, notching 32 kills in the three matches while hitting .329. She saved her best performance for the finale, picking up 16 kills and six blocks against Fairleigh Dickinson.

Junior setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) and sophomore defensive specialist Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) were named to the all-tournament team. Morrison collected 69 assists on the weekend, in addition to 14 kills and 22 digs. Muzzonigro averaged 4.33 digs per set in the three matches, leading the Friar defense.

The Opposition
Manhattan College (3-5, 0-0 Metro-Atlantic) The Jaspers of Manhattan College will play their fourth-consecutive match in the Ocean State after going 2-1 at the Bryant Invitational in Smithfield, R.I. Manhattan dropped a five-set match to Bryant before picking up wins against Navy and Holy Cross on day two of the tournament.

Second-year head coach Mark Jones' squad is led by senior middle-blocker Diane Strutner, who averages 3.68 kills per set. Sophomore Jamie Collareta sets up the offense and is averaging 8.82 assists per set on the campaign. Defensively, the Jaspers rely on sophomore Julie Bies, who leads the team with 4.21 digs per set. Strutner also contributes in the back row, as she is second on the team with 3.29 digs per set.

Providence and Manhattan have two common opponents thus far on the season, in Navy and Holy Cross. While Manhattan defeated Navy, the Friars fell to the Mids in August at the Norfolk State Tournament. In addition, both teams have scored four-set victories over Holy Cross, with Providence's win coming in their home-opener on September 1.

On-Deck
The Friars return to the road this weekend, September 17-18, for the Bethune-Cookman Beach Bash in Daytona Beach, Fla. Providence takes on Winston-Salem State on Friday at 4:00 p.m. before meeting Savannah State on Saturday at noon and the host Wildcats at 5:00 p.m.
