PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team (0-4, 0-0) opens up the home portion of its schedule Wednesday, September 1, when they play host to the College of the Holy Cross (2-2, 0-0). The match is set for 7:00 p.m. at Mullaney Gymnasium.
Head Coach Margot Royer-Johnson's squad is looking to rebound after dropping four matches at the Spartan Classic, hosted by Norfolk State University. The top performer for the Friars was junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), who earned a spot on the all-tournament team. The middle blocker notched 61 kills on the weekend, good for 4.07 per set, while also recording nine service aces and 12 total blocks. Fletcher finds herself among the leaders in America East, currently ranking first in service aces, second in hitting percentage and third in kills.
Providence and Holy Cross met almost exactly one year ago, when the Friars traveled to Worcester, Mass., on September 2, 2009, and picked up a thrilling five-set victory. Fletcher was among the leaders for the Friars last year, posting eight kills, nine blocks and three service aces.
Sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) also performed well early into her freshman campaign against Holy Cross last year, registering 20 digs. Setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) also turned in a solid performance with 31 assists, nine digs and four service aces.
The Opposition Head Coach Marritt Cafarchia is in her third year with Holy Cross. The Crusaders have posted a 2-2 mark to open 2010, posting wins over Boston College and Quinnipiac before falling to Northeastern and Fordham. The match with Providence will mark the first road game for Holy Cross. They enter Wednesday's match with a .171 team hitting percentage.
The Crusaders are led by sophomore outside hitter Megan Lynch, who has posted 48 kills in four matches. Lynch also leads the way defensively with 38 digs. Senior captain Chelsey O'Donnell sets-up the offense, already having recorded 125 assists, good for 8.93 per set.
On-Deck The Friars will head to Lewisburg, Pa., this weekend, September 3-4, for the Bucknell Invitational. Providence will take on Iona College in the opener on Friday, Sept. 3 at 5:00 p.m. The following day, the Friars will have a pair of matches, first against Eastern Michigan at 3:00 p.m. then against Bucknell at 5:00 p.m.
