Friars Add International Experience to the Class of 2014

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Head Women's Soccer Coach Jim McGirr announced on Monday, June 7 that the Friars will add two international players to the class of 2014. Thorhildur Olafsdottir (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland) and Elinborg Ingvarsdottir (Grindavik, Iceland) will attend Providence beginning in the fall of 2010. Both student-athletes have extensive playing experience at the highest level of soccer in their country.
"Both of these players come from a soccer culture in Iceland, and will add another dimension and some quality depth to a very strong returning team next year, which only missed the post season by one game," McGirr said. "We are excited have Thorhildur and Elinborg join our program for the next four years, but also to help us continue to foster a more professional approach to our environment."
ELINBORG INGVARSDOTTIR - GRINDAVIK, ICELAND
Elinborg Ingvarsdottir comes to Providence after graduating from Grunnskoli Grindavikur prep school and playing for her club team Grindavik for 13 years. "Elinborg joins us as one of the most experienced players in the program's history," McGirr said. "She has twice played in the Icelandic U-19's in the European Championships. She also played in the Algarve Cup with the full National Team, in which she competed against the United States, Sweden and Norway - three of the top women's teams in the world!".
Ingvarsdottir played 34 national games at the under-17 and under-19 level where she notched two goals.
"Elinborg is an athletic, technical and versatile midfielder with great vision who can play more defensively or in the attack. She also can fill-in at other positions." McGirr added.
THORHILDUR "TOTA" OLAFSDOTTIR - VESTMANNAEYJAR, ICELAND
Thorhildur Olafsdottir will join the Friars after attending Vestmannaeyjum High School for four years and Hamarsskoli Prep School for 10 years. Olafsdottir has been playing for her club team IBV for 14 years and has served as captain for four. She was named The Most Promising Player in 2005 and 2006. She also was tabbed as the 2010 Athlete of the Year in her hometown after scoring 19 goals in 15 games.
"Tota has a great deal of experience at the National Team level as well, having been called into the full team camp in preparation for the Algarve Cup. She also played in the U-19 European Championships." McGirr added.
Olafsdottir will look to be another scoring threat to the Friars in 2010 with her aggressive attacking style and abilities.
