PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Head Lacrosse Coach Chris Burdick announced on Thursday, June 24 that JM Simpson has been named Assistant Coach. Simpson replaces James Courter `07, who resigned in May to pursue another career opportunity.

"We are very happy to have JM Simpson join our program," Coach Burdick said. "JM has a great mind for the game of lacrosse and brings a high level of energy and enthusiasm to everything he does. He is a tireless worker and he will have an immediate impact on our recruiting efforts. I also want to thank James Courter for his great effort and hard work over the past year."

Simpson comes to Providence after two seasons as an assistant coach at St. Mary's College of Maryland. While at St. Mary's, Simpson worked with Head Coach Chris Hasbrouck. He was involved in all aspects of recruiting and day-to-day operations of the men's lacrosse program. He was instrumental in coordinating the defensive playbook and goaltender instruction. Simpson also managed the substitution box during games.

Prior to his tenure at St. Mary's, Simpson spent three seasons at Marist College. He began his time with the Red Foxes as an assistant coach under the direction of Head Coach Andy Copelan in the fall of 2005. Simpson was elevated to head coach in December of 2005 upon Copelan's departure for Maryland. Simpson directed Marist during the 2006, 2007 and 2008 campaigns as a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). During his time at Marist, Simpson was responsible for the daily operations of the program. He served as the offensive coordinator in 2006 and made the transition to defensive coordinator for the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Simpson was instrumental in the recruitment of MAAC Rookie of the Year Matt Teichmann and MAAC scoring leader Corey Zindel. He also played a significant role in fund-raising efforts.

"He's been a head coach, so he brings a helpful perspective to decision making and planning," Burdick added.

Simpson's coaching career began at his alma mater, Division III national power-house Salisbury University, where he served as assistant coach for one season (2005). Working with Head Coach Jim Berkman, Simpson was involved in all aspects of game and practice preparation, as well as individual player workouts. As an assistant coach, he helped guide Salisbury to the NCAA Division III National title.

During Simpson's playing career at Salisbury, he helped his team capture the 2003 and 2004 NCAA National Championship and won four-straight Capital Athletic Conference Championships. Salisbury recorded a 68-8 overall record during Simpson's four-year career (2001-04). Simpson was a team captain in 2004 during Salisbury's run to the national championship.

Simpson assumes his duties at Providence College, effective immediately.

"I want to thank Coach Burdick, Bob Driscoll and Father Shanley for affording me this dream of being an assistant coach in the prestigious BIG EAST Conference," Simpson said. "I would also like to thank Chris Hasbrouck, Andy Copelan and Jim Berkman for their mentorship along the way. This is a great chance to help build something special at Providence. Just walking the campus, I can see the direction this organization is going. The new facilities are breathtaking, and looking at the talent level of the recruits coming in this fall, I just believe something special can happen here."
