BRISTOL, R.I. - The Providence College lacrosse team continued its rich history of community outreach on Saturday, October 30, when members of the team visited St. Elizabeth's Manor, a nursing home in Bristol, R.I. The team members participated in various activities with residents during the visit, with the highlight being senior midfielder Evan Helda's (Charlotte, N.C.) performance on piano.
"The Activity Staff and residents really enjoyed the students being here with them. Some helped with group activities. Some did individualized activities with residents. One of the students played the piano for a while after Bingo ended, which the residents really enjoyed. They are looking forward to other team members coming during the next two weeks," said Rev. David P. Proctor, the Director of Spirituality and Community Services at St. Elizabeth Manor.
Friar Head Coach Chris Burdick has a history of encouraging his student-athletes to be active in the community. Already in this fall, the team has had members visit Kent County Hospital in Warwick, R.I., as well as volunteer at the Blackstone River Rubber Duck Race to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Lincoln-Cumberland, R.I. Their work also will take them to St. Mary's Church in Newport, R.I., later this fall.
"We take a cross-section of the community and divide our team up to try to have as large of an impact as possible. We want our students graduating with a wide range of experiences that will hopefully lead to their continued service after college," Burdick explains.
The Friar lacrosse program is always looking for new areas to expand its community outreach. For more information, contact Burdick at cburdick@providence.edu.
