PROVIDENCE, R.I. - PROVIDENCE COLLEGE:The Providence College women's soccer team led, by Head Coach Jim McGirr, opens its 2009 campaign on Friday, August 28 when it travels to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on Saint Joseph's University at 7:00 p.m.
The Friars enter the season determined to improve upon their 6-8-3 (1-7-3 BIG EAST) 2008 record. Providence returns eight seniors and adds one graduate student, creating one of the most experienced squads in one of the nation's best conferences, the BIG EAST. Their depth in experience and leadership will be vital to the growth of their five incoming freshmen who will look to make an immediate impact.
Offensively, Providence will be led by senior Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) who led the team in goals (four), assists (two) and points (12) during the 2008 season. Joining Camburn on the frontline will be junior Kate DelCiampo (Wethersfield, Conn.) who recorded one goal and was tied for the team lead with two assists in 2008. Kelsey Detwiler (Scituate, Mass.) and Alyssa Gillespie (Stratford, Conn.) join the Friars as freshmen and hope to make an immediate impact. Both Detwiler and Gillespie come to Providence with vast experience at the Olympic Development Program (ODP) by making the Region 1 team.
Senior Tara Ricciardi (Wayne, N.J.) will be the backbone of the Friars midfield after starting all 17 games and tallying two goals last season. Ricciardi will be joined by seniors Nicole Benko (Valley Stream, N.Y.), who started 16 games, and Caitlin Hostetler (Portsmouth, R.I.), who played in 10 games last season. Joining the midfield will be freshmen Jenna Roncarati (Cumberland, R.I.) who was recently named to the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) All-East Second Team and was also a member of the Region I ODP team.
Defensively, Providence is filled with veterans who have a vast amount of experience. Senior Katelin Blaine (Warwick, N.Y.) will return to action for the Friars in 2009 after injury plagued sophomore and junior years. Junior Marra Whaley (Rocky Hill, Conn.) started 16 games in 2008 and appeared in all 18 games in 2007. Joining them will be sophomores Courtney Collins (North Wales, Pa.) and Taylor Bartini (Suffield, Conn.) who will add to the strength of the backline. The Friars also will be adding graduate student Rebecca Fish (Wakefield, R.I.) who comes highly experienced from the University Rhode Island, where she started 47 of 61 games. In high school, Fish was a two-time NSCAA All-American and will add experience and talent to the already veteran group of Friar defenders.
The game against the Hawks is the first of the Friars' season-opening three-game road trip. They also will take on Delaware on August 30 in Newark, Del. at 1:00 p.m. and Massachusetts on September 4 in Amherst, Mass. at 4:00 p.m. Following the UMass game, the Friars will make their home debut versus Quinnipiac on September 6 in Providence, R.I. at 1:00 p.m. on Glay Field.
SAINT JOSEPH'S: The Saint Joseph's Hawks begin their 2009 season with a home opener against the Providence College Friars after posting the program's best record since 2003 a year ago. In 2008, the Hawks finished with an overall record of 8-7-4 and finished eighth in the A-10 with a 3-4-4 record after being picked to finish last in conference preseason polls. Offensively the Hawks are led by sophomore Jen Pfeiffer (Mount Laurel, N.J.) who led the team in 2008 with 21 points on 10 goals and one assist. Pfeiffer will return in 2009 as the reigning A-10 Women's Soccer Rookie of the Year, a member of the SoccerBuzz.com All-Freshmen Mid-Atlantic Team, and of 32 student-athletes nominated for Women's Soccer Player of the Year by Soccer News Net.

Yozwiak was named to the A-10 Preseason Women's All-Rookie Team after setting single-season and career records for goals and points at Pleasant Valley High School in Pennsylvania.
On defense, the Hawks posted five shutouts in 2008 behind the strong play of their goalkeeper, Cara Critchlow (Wall, N.J.). Critchlow started 10 games, played a total of 960 minutes, and had a save percentage of .818.
