BUFFALO, N.Y. - The No. 4-seeded Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to No. 1-seeded Siena College by the score of 7-1 in a MAAC Tournament Semifinal game on Friday, May 1 in Buffalo, N.Y. Sophomore Mike Feldberg (Voorhees, N.J.) netted the goal for PC while junior Colin Tigh (Garden City, N.Y.) added an assist. The Friars conclude their season with a 6-10 record while Siena improves to 11-5.
The Saints got things started with a goal by freshman Bryan Neufeld with 11:12 to go in the first quarter. It marked the only score of the period. Providence goaltender Robert Bryan (Apex, N.C.) made two saves in the quarter.
Jordan Loftus gave Siena a 2-0 advantage with a score at the 7:04 mark of the second quarter and senior Chris Zarins moved the Saints ahead 3-0 with a streaking goal with 3:16 to play in the period. Siena took the 3-0 lead into the half.
It marked the first time this season that the Friars were held scoreless in a half.
The Saints extended their lead to 4-0 on a strike by Kenny Mazzone at the 12:45 mark of the third quarter. Neufeld added a score with 1:53 remaining in the third to give Siena a 5-0 advantage.
The Friars ended Siena's 5-0 run with a goal by Feldberg off an assist by junior Colin Tigh (Garden City, N.Y.) to make the score 5-1 Siena with 52 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Siena's Bryan Neufeld answered with his third goal of the game and the Saints moved back up five at 6-1 with 12:01 left in the game.
Junior Shaun Dunn added a score for the Saints at the 4:55 mark of the fourth quarter to make the final score 7-1 in favor of Siena.
Bryan played all 60:00 minutes in goal for the Friars, posting seven saves while allowing seven goals. Siena goaltender and First-Team All-MAAC selection Brent Herbst picked up the win for the Saints, making eight saves while allowing one goal.
Sophomore Mike Bowler (Winchester, Mass.) was 7-of-11 (.636) on face-off opportunities for PC and junior Ryan Riedl (Winchester, Mass.) caused a game-high three turnovers and picked up a game-high five ground balls.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Riedl and Feldberg were selected to the 2009 MAAC All-Tournament Team.
