PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College men's lacrosse team (2-4, 1-0) earned a 7-6 comeback victory over Quinnipiac University (1-5) on Wednesday, March 18 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Friars trailed by as many as four goals in the first half, but PC rallied to outscore the Bobcats 5-to-1 in the second half and pick up the win.
Senior Danny Ryan (Chatham, N.J.) had a career night for PC, recording four points on three goals and an assist. Ryan has posted a least a point for Providence in each of the last four games.
The Friars opened the scoring in the game's first minute with junior Colin Tigh (Garden City, N.Y.) posting a goal off a good feed from Ryan to put Providence up, 1-0.
After the Friars' early goal, Quinnipiac responded with five-consecutive scores to take a 5-1 lead with 8:17 to play in the second quarter. Kevin Kelly netted two scores for the Bobcats during the run.
With 3:17 to go in the opening half, Tigh notched his second goal of the game on an assist by senior Bobby Labadini (Westford, Mass.) and the Friars trailed, 5-2, at intermission.
The Providence offense opened the second half on a tear, putting together a 3-0 run that tied the score at five midway through the third quarter. Ryan posted two of the goals and sophomore Steve Lydon (Braintree, Mass.) notched the other during the sequence for PC.
Quinnipiac responded to the run with an unassisted goal from Todd Kaiser to retake the lead at 6-5 with 3:11 to play in the third.
After a defensive struggle to open the final quarter, Labadini knotted the score at six with a shot past Quinnipiac goaltender Kevin Benzing at the 5:13 mark of the fourth. Ryan tallied the winning goal less than a minute later and the Friars prevented Quinnipiac from scoring on a man-up opportunity in the game's final seconds to clinch the victory.
Senior Robert Bryan (Apex, N.C.) got the win for the Friars in goal and is now 2-4 on the season. Bryan made six saves and allowed five goals in 55:37 minutes of action. He let up only one goal in the second half to help the Friars earn the comeback win. Freshman Tim Finnegan (Lowell, Mass.) played 4:23 minutes in the second quarter for PC and made a save while allowing one goal.
Benzing played all 60:00 minutes in net for Quinnipiac, making 10 saves while allowing seven goals. Kelly led the Bobcats with two scores on the night.
After today's matchup, the Friars travel to Staten Island, N.Y. for a 2:00 p.m. contest at Wagner College on Saturday, March 21. PC will look to improve to 2-0 in the MAAC for the second-straight season.
