FRIARS TO FACE BROWN IN 24TH ANNUAL MAYOR'S CUP... After eight days without playing a game, the PC men's hockey team will play three games in five days, beginning on Tuesday, November 17 at 7:00 p.m. against Brown in the 24th Annual Mayor's Cup at Schneider Arena.
FRIARS AGAINST NON-CONFERENCE FOES... Providence College has posted a 4-1 record in non-conference games this season, including a 3-1 mark against teams from the CCHA. The Friars have outscored opponents, 16-8, in the five non-conference contests so far this season. PC also has defeated Atlantic Hockey foe, Holy Cross. The Friars close out their non-conference schedule against Brown and Dartmouth from ECAC Hockey. Last season, the Friars posted a 3-4-0 record in non-league action.
MAYOR'S CUP HISTORY... Providence College leads the Mayor's Cup series, 13-8-2. Last season, the Friars held on to defeat the Bears, 4-3, on December 9 at Meehan Auditorium. The Friars have won three of the last four meetings, including two consecutive seasons.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS BROWN... Tuesday night's game will mark the 90th all-time meeting between Providence College and Brown with the series tied, 43-43-2. In the first ever meeting between the two teams, Brown defeated Providence, 4-1, on March 1, 1927 at the Rhode Island Auditorium. The Friars are 5-4-1 against the Bears in the last 10 meetings.
FRIAR QUICK NOTES... • The Friars rank 10th in the country in team defense, allowing 2.12 goals per game ... Six of the Friars' eight games so far this season have been on the road ... The Friars are 4-2 in games away from Schneider Arena this season ... PC has killed off its opponents' last five power-play opportunities ... Junior Jordan Kremyr (Cloverdale, B.C.) already has a career-high five assists this season.
SCOUTING BROWN... Brown University (0-4-1) is seeking its first win of the season after a home loss against Cornell on Saturday, November 14. The Bears also were defeated by Colgate on Friday, November 13 despite two goals by Jordan Pietrus. Jack MacLellan leads the team with three points on three assists, while Pietrus and Aaron Volpatti have two goals each. Mike Clemente has played all five games in net for the Bears and has a .893 goals against average.
BEAUDRY AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS... Alex Beaudry comes into Tuesday's game among the top-19 in the nation in two statistical categories. He ranks 19th with a 2.15 goals against average and 13th with a .932 save percentage. Beaudry has helped the Friar defense allow just 17 goals in eight games.
LAST TIME OUT... In its last game, Providence was defeated at No. 15 Vermont, 3-0, on Sunday, November 8 in Burlington, Vt. The Catamounts scored two late goals in the second period en route to the win. The Friars finished with a 33-20 advantage in shots as UVM's Mike Spillane stopped all 33 attempts. The loss ended PC's three-game road winning streak.
BEAUDRY NAMED HOCKEY EAST GOALTENDER OF THE MONTH... Alex Beaudry was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Month for October. Beaudry is the first Friar to earn a league monthly honor since Tyler Sims was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Month in December, 2005. Beaudry finished the month of October with a 4-2 record, a 2.01 goals against average and a .939 save percentage. He recorded 31 saves in a 3-2 win at No. 7 Notre Dame on October 15 and stopped a career-high 47 shots, including 20 in the third period to lead the Friars to a 2-1 victory at No. 17 UMass on October 31. Beaudry, who was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week twice in October, held opponents to two goals or fewer in five of the six games he played in. He has helped the Friars jump out to a 5-2 start, including a 4-1 mark on the road.
TIMELY SCORING... In three of their five victories this season, the Friars have scored late goals in the second and third period. The Friars scored with 1:18 left in the second period in their 2-1 victory over Holy Cross on October 10. On October 15, PC posted a 3-2 win at No. 7 Notre Dame thanks to a goal with 3:46 left in the third period. The Friars also scored with 3:46 left in the third period to break a 1-1 tie and post a 3-1 triumph at Bowling Green on October 24. In addition, Providence also has scored in the first five minutes of the opening period in three of its five wins.
FRIARS IN CLOSE GAMES... Three of Providence College's five wins this season have been one-goal contests. PC edged Holy Cross, 2-1, on October 10 and Notre Dame, 3-2, on October 15. Most recently, PC posted a 2-1 triumph at No. 17 Massachusetts on October 31. In addition, the Friars recorded a 3-1 win at Bowling Green on October 24. Last season, the Friars posted a 3-3 record in one-goal games.
FAMILY TIES... Providence College freshmen Chris Rooney (Canton, Mass.) and Alex Velischek (Kinnelon, N.J.) are sons of former Friar hockey greats. Rooney is the son of former Friar, Steve Rooney. Steve Rooney scored the game-winning goal as the Friars defeated Boston College, 2-1, in double overtime in the inaugural Hockey East championship game in 1985. Steve, who finished his collegiate career with 124 career points, went on to play in the NHL for the Montreal Canadiens team that claimed the 1986 Stanley Cup title. Alex is the son of former Friar Randy Velischek, who is one of the best defensemen to play at the College. He was named ECAC Player of the year in and 1982-83 earned All-America honors. Randy, who helped the Friars to the 1981 ECAC championship and two NCAA Tournament appearances (1981, 1983), played 10 seasons in the NHL (509 games). He played for Minnesota, New Jersey and Quebec.
FROM THE LAND OF 10,000 LAKES TO THE OCEAN STATE... The 2009-10 Friar squad has six players from Minnesota, more than any other state or province. Last season, Matt Bergland (Faribault) and Rob Maloney (Eagan) were the representatives on the squad from Minnesota. In addition, David Brown (Centennial, Colo.) played high school hockey in Minnesota. This season, the team will have four more players from the "Land of 10,000 Lakes." They are: Willie Hess (Lino Lakes), Aaron Jamnick (Hibbing), Tyler Landman (Roseau) and Billy Simon (Burnsville).
OCEAN STATE CONNECTION... The 2009-10 men's hockey team has a strong contingent of Rhode Islanders. In addition to four players, Head Coach Tim Army (East Providence) and Assistant Coach David Berard (Coventry) also hail from the Ocean State. The Rhode Islanders on this season's team are: seniors David Cavanagh (Warwick) and John Cavanagh (Warwick), junior Eric Baier (North Kingstown) and sophomore Justin Gates (Cranston).
FRIAR ALUMNI UPDATE... Two Providence College alumni are currently playing in the NHL. Fernando Pisani '00 is playing for the Edmonton Oilers, while Hal Gill '97, who helped the Pittsburgh Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup title, is currently skating with the Montreal Canadiens. In addition, there are two former Friars who will play an integral part on U.S.A. men's hockey team at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Brian Burke '77, who is the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, will serve as the general manager of Team U.S.A. Ron Wilson '77, the head coach of the Maple Leafs, will be the head coach of Team U.S.A. Lou Lamoriello '63, former student-athlete, head coach and athletic director at PC, is the current President and General Manager of the New Jersey Devils. Lamoriello was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fall on November 9, 2009 in Toronto, Ontario.
