STORRS, CONN.-- The Providence College women's soccer team fell to Connecticut 1-0 on Friday, September 19 at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn. The Friars fall to 4-2 (0-1 BIG EAST) on the season while the Huskies improve to 3-5 (1-0).
The Friars took control early in the first half. In the ninth minute, junior Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) gained control of the ball deep in the Husky zone, passed back to freshman Courtney Collins (North Wales, Penn.) whose shot was caught at the top corner of the UConn net. Later, in the 12th minute, Collins gained possession down the left sideline, sent a pass to junior Tara Ricciardi (Wayne, N.J.) in the middle, whose shot went wide. PC was tested down in their own zone in the 24th minute as the Huskies' Ashley O'Brien took a corner which was controlled 15 yards out by Erin Clark. Clark took the shot to which Friar sophomore goalkeeper Jill Schott (Windham, N.H.) made the first of her three first half saves on a diving stop. Late in the half, Ricciardi gave the ball to classmate Caitlin Hostetler (Portsmouth, R.I.) wide right of the goal. Hostetler took a high shot that was almost deflected in by sophomore Kylie Ricker (Leominster, Mass.) in front of UConn goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe.
Schott made a brilliant save to start the second half after a shot from the top by Melissa Busque. Schott punched the shot over the top of the goal in the 53rd minute. The best Friar chance of the second half came as Nicole Benko (Valley Stream, N.Y.) sent a ball to sophomore Kate DelCiampo (Wethersfield, Conn.) in the 81st minute on the far side. DelCiampo took a shot that Labbe pushed wide. 45 seconds later, freshman Taylor Bartini (Suffield, Conn.) took a shot from 30 yards out that went just wide of the net.
Annie Yi put the Huskies ahead for good in the 86th minute, as she took a shot over the outstretched arms of Schott to put UConn up 1-0.
Schott finished the game with 10 saves off 23 Husky shots. Labbe made three saves off 11 Friar attempts. UConn took 12 corner kicks to the Friars' six.
PC will return to Glay Field on Sunday, September 21 to take on UMass at 4:00 p.m.
