WORCESTER, Mass. -- Providence College freshman forward Jonathan Medcalf (Tulsa, Okla.), the reigning BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season with 4:21 remaining in regulation as the Friars defeated Holy Cross, 3-2, Tuesday night at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium in Worcester, Mass. With the win, the Friars (7-2) matched last season's win total. The Crusaders fell to 4-5.
Medcalf, who had just entered the match as a substitute prior to a PC corner kick, controlled the ball in the box and rifled a low right-footed shot from eight yards out to give the Friars the lead for good in the 86th minute.
The Friars struck first in the 20th minute off a set play from the left flank. Junior Alex Bury (Shrewsbury, Mass.) sent a free kick into the 18-yard box that went off the hands Holy Cross goalkeeper Keith Bauer, but the ball went right to Friar sophomore Timothy Ritter (Weston, Mass.) who headed in his first goal of the season from five yards out.
The Crusaders evened the score early in the second half when senior Josh Trott connected on his team leading ninth goal of the season. Trott's shot from 20 yards out found the top left corner of the net in the 47th minute. However, the Friars quickly responded as they took advantage of another set piece to regain the lead in the 54th minute. Freshman Justin Kahle (Oceanport, N.J.) curled a corner kick to sophomore Kevin Nuemen (Miller Place, N.Y.) who used his hip from five yards out to score his third goal of the season.
Holy Cross rallied once again with 9:01 remaining as Jerry Dicksinson found an opening in the far post off a free kick and curled a shot from seven yards out. Dickinson's goal set up the heroics for Medcalf, who scored his second match-winning goal in as many matches. Medcalf also tallied the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Marquette on September 23. Friar sophomore goalkeeper Timothy Murray (Haverhill, Mass.), who was making his first career start, made two saves, while Bauer stopped three shots for the Crusaders.
