SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Sophomore Kevin Neumen (Miller Place, N.Y.) scored the match winner in the 90th minute to lead the Providence College men's soccer team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Syracuse Thursday night at the SU Soccer Stadium. With the win, the Friars improved to 5-1 overall, including a 3-0 mark in the BIG EAST, their best start ever in conference play. In addition, the Friars have now four consecutive matches for the first time since 1999. Syracuse fell to 3-3 overall and 0-3 in conference action.
Trailing 2-1 late in the match, the Orange responded in the 89th minute to even the score at 2-2 as Hansen Woodruff's header found the back of the net. It appeared the match was heading into overtime, but Neumen, the reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, scored his second goal of the season to move the Friars into sole possession of first place in the BIG EAST Blue Division. On the match-winning tally, senior goalkeeper Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.) played a free kick from the midfield line into a crowded 18-yard box. Ritter was able to flick the ball to Nuemen, who headed the ball into the net with three seconds remaining in regulation.
The Orange took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when Kyle Hall connected on his team leading fifth goal of the season. However, the Friars pulled even at 1-1 in the 33rd minute when senior tri-captain Joe Weill (Merrick, N.Y.) scored his second collegiate tally. Weill's right footed blast from the top of the 18-yard box sailed over the head of Syracuse goaltender Robert Cavicchia and into the net.
Freshman Jonathan Medcalf (Tulsa, Okla.) put Providence ahead, 2-1, in the 70th minute as he scored his second goal of the season after a scramble in front of the net. Medcalf's goal was a prelude to a wild last two minutes as the Orange tied the game at 88:14, but at 89:57 Neumen provided the heroics for the Friars, who also edged the Orange, 3-2, last season in Providence.
Providence is back in action on Sunday, September 17 with a BIG EAST match at St. John's at 6:00 p.m. The match will be aired live on ESPNU.
