PROVIDENCE, R.I. - PROVIDENCE: The Friars will begin the 2006 campaign looking to build on a 2005 season that saw the team post its highest win total since 2000. Providence returns five starters from a year ago and do not have one senior on the team. Consisting of two juniors, seven sophomores, and three freshmen, the Friars are undoubtedly one of the youngest teams in the nation and are headed in the right direction.
HARTFORD: The Hawks opened the season last weekend with a 3-0 loss at Connecticut. The team had an 8-22 record last season including two wins against Providence. Hartford returns two of its star players in junior Jennifer Monroy and senior Teri Connolly. Monroy (OH) averaged 3.68 kills per game and finished the season with 364. Connolly (MB) tallied 232 kills.
HOLY CROSS: The Crusaders are returning all but one player from a year ago and will begin their season this weekend against Sacred Heart. Last year, the team compiled a 7-19 record including a victory over the Friars. Junior Christine Strawson (OH) led the team in kills last season with 351.
SACRED HEART: The Pioneers will begin their season on Friday with a match against Holy Cross. Sacred Heart had a 6-21 record last season including two losses against Providence. Senior Charnette Porter posted 134 kills and 59 total blocks last season. Also returning for the Crusaders is junior Christine Duffy, who tallied 241 kills and 157 digs a year ago.
Providence will next take part in the Chesapeake Challenge on Friday, September 8 and Saturday, September 9 with two matches on Friday being played at the United States Naval Academy and two matches on Saturday at Loyola.
