PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's soccer team took a 1-0 halftime lead and went on to defeat Sacred Heart, 4-1, in a season-opening match on Friday, August 25 at Glay Field. The four goals marks the most by a PC team in a the season opener since the Friars scored six times against Sacred Heart in the first match of the 2003 season.
Both teams had several chances to score early on. In the third minute, Sacred Heart's Jesper Fredriksson eluded a defender and settled the ball just inside the 18-yard box, before firing a shot that was deflected by PC senior goalkeeper Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.) and cleared off the goal line by sophomore Kevin Neumen (Miller Place, N.Y.).
The home side took the lead just before the halftime whistle when junior defender Matt Otte (East Lyme, Conn.) rifled home his second career goal. Otte took the initial shot from 10 yards out, but Sacred Heart's goalkeeper Matthew Weston made a sprawling save. However, the ball bounced right back to Otte who tucked the ball into the left corner of the net in the 40th minute.
The Friars wasted little time to gain a two-goal advantage in the second half. Junior Ryan Maduro's (Bristol, R.I.) through ball found unmarked classmate Hadrien Toure (Lyon, France), who was able to slot the ball past Weston from 12 yards out in the 50th minute. The Friars barely had time to celebrate the two-goal lead as the Pioneers responded 16 seconds later to cut the PC margin to 2-1. Junior Ricart Mendes was able to find an opening down the right flank and made a low crossing pass to freshman Svetozar Gladic who scored his first collegiate goal.
However, the Friars kept the pressure on and were rewarded in the 67th minute when freshman Jonathan Medcalf (Tulsa, Oklahoma) tallied his first collegiate goal. Medcalf, who had just come into the game as a substitute, settled a pass from junior Alex Bury (Shrewsbury, Mass.) before firing a shot from just inside the 18-yard box as the Friars regained their two-goal advantage. Maduro tacked on a goal in the 72nd minute to complete the scoring. After a corner kick, Neumen rifled a shot from 15 yards out that was blocked, however, the ball found the right foot of Maduro, who deposited the ball into the left corner.
Konopka finished with four saves for the Friars, while Weston stopped 8 shots for the Pioneers. PC finished with a 17-10 shot advantage.
Providence is back in action on Monday, August 28 with a home match at the University of Rhode Island at 3:00 p.m.
