PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Head Lacrosse Coach Chris Burdick announced the Friars' 2006 award winners on Monday, June 19. The program gives out four major team awards at the end of each season and the honorees for 2006 were junior James Courter (Lincoln Park, N.J.), senior Ron Westgate (Forestdale, Mass.), senior Mark Seyer (Kirkwood, Mo.) and junior Thomas Wenskus (East Islip, N.Y.).
Courter was the recipient of the Mark C. Cordon "Heart and Soul" Award, given annually to the individual who displays the highest level of commitment to the lacrosse program. This individual puts his "heart and soul" into the team and exemplifies the level of commitment displayed by former Friar Mark Cordon. Courter, a two-year team captain for the Friars, started all 17 games on defense in 2006. He registered his first collegiate assist in an, 8-4, victory over Manhattan on April 19. Courter finished the year with 25 groundballs.
Westgate earned the Spignazi/Berk Legacy Award, given to the individual who worked either on the field or behind the scenes to continue the legacy of success exemplified by the contributions of Tom Spignazi and Matt Berk. Westgate, a three-year captain, appeared in five games for Providence in 2006. However, it was his work ethic, leadership and commitment to the program that earned him the respect of his teammates and coaches.
Seyer was given the Unsung Hero Award, given to the individual who contributed the most to the team, but did not always get the proper recognition for his effort. Seyer contributed to the Friars' success in 2006 in every facet of the game. He registered 22 goals and two assists for 24 points. His 22 goals marked a single-season career best and also ranked second among his teammates in 2006. Seyer was the Friars' primary face-off man and won 104 of 218 face-off opportunities at the "X" for a 0.477 face-off percentage. He also led the team in groundballs with 78.
Wenskus earned the Steve O'Donnell "Coach's Award", given annually to the individual who contributes the most to the team in extending the mission of the coaching staff with regard to teaching the game of lacrosse. Wenskus was unable to play for the Friars in 2006 because of an injury, but played a critical role in mentoring PC's face-off men. During the 2005 season, Wenskus won 11-of-20 (.550) face-off opportunities as a reserve.
