BUFFALO, N.Y. - Four Providence College men's lacrosse players earned All-MAAC post-season honors at the annual MAAC Championship Banquet on Thursday, May 4 in Buffalo, N.Y. Senior Michael Farley (Westfield, N.J.) and junior James Courter (Lincoln Park, N.J.) were named to the All-MAAC First Team. Junior Peter Littell (Upper Montclair, N.J.) and senior Liam Smith (Islip, N.Y.) were selected by the league's head coaches as members of the All-MAAC Second Team. Farley, Littell and Smith are first-time recipients of post-season league honors, while Courter earns All-MAAC recognition for the second time in his career.
Farley led the Friars in scoring during the regular season with 39 points on 29 goals and 10 assists. Each of his offensive totals mark single-season career highs for the third-year player. Farley registered a career-high five points against North Carolina on April 23, and owns 12 multiple-point games on the season. He has tallied three-or-more goals in four games and has a team-best three game-winning goals. In two previous seasons with the team, Farley totaled 16 goals and seven assists for 23 points. To date, he has 45 goals and 17 assists for 62 career points. It marks the first time in Farley's career that he has earned post-season All-MAAC honors. In 2004, Farley was named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team.
Courter earns All-MAAC honors for the second time in his career. Last season, he was named to the All-MAAC Second Team, and was selected to the Preseason All-MAAC Team in 2006. The 6-foot, 5-inch, defenseman has started each of the Friars' 14 games this season and has picked up 17 groundballs. On April 19, he registered the first point of his collegiate career on an assist to help Providence defeat Manhattan, 8-4, on April 19.
Littell, a three-time MAAC Defensive Player of the Week selection, earns All-MAAC post-season honors for the first time in his career. He has played 13 of the Friars' 14 games in goal this season and owns an 8-5 overall record (6-2 MAAC). In 791:04 minutes of action, Littell has posted a 7.36 goals against average and a 0.602 save percentage. He has faced 375 shots, made 147 saves and allowed just 97 goals.
Smith, another veteran defenseman for the Friars, earns MAAC honors for the first time in his career. He has started each of Providence's 14 games this season and owns a total of 35 groundballs, which ranks third best on the team and tops among long-sticks. Twenty-four of his 35 groundballs have been recorded against MAAC opponents, including a season-high six pick-ups vs. VMI on April 15.
Providence (8-6) begins play in the MAAC Men's Lacrosse Tournament on Friday, May 5. The top-seeded Friars will take on No. 4 Marist in the first semifinal game of the day at 4:00 p.m. in Buffalo, N.Y. In the second semifinal game, scheduled for 6:30 p.m., No. 2 Mount St. Mary's will face No. 3 Canisius. The winner of each semifinal game will advance to the MAAC Championship final on Sunday, May 7 at Noon.
