PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College volleyball Head Coach Margot Royer has set the 2006 volleyball schedule. Made up of 29 regular season contests including seven tournaments, the Friars will once again face a national slate of challenging opponents.
Opening the year in Hartford, Conn., on September 1, the Friars' home-opener is set for Wednesday, September 13 against Holy Cross. The match is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. in PC's Mullaney Gymnasium.
The third annual Friar Invitational, held September 15-16, also highlights the 2006 campaign. PC welcomes Coppin State (Baltimore, Md.), Chicago State (Chicago, Ill.) and Colgate (Hamilton, N.Y.) to the four-team affair.
The Friars also will travel to North Dakota for the National Independent Volleyball Tournament Nov. 11-12.
Providence volleyball finished the 2005 season with a 7-28 record, its highest win total since the 2000 campaign. The youthful team returns 10 letter winners including eight sophomores and two juniors. Freshman Amanda Little (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) was a Second Team Division I All-Independent selection as she totaled a single-season school-record 627 digs in her first year with the Friars. She also averaged 5.06 digs per game and was ranked among the nation's top-25 leaders in digs per game for most of the year.
