POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Providence senior Tom Kelly (Henniker, N.H.) netted two goals and senior Mark Seyer (Kirkwood, Mo.) added one goal to give the Friars an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter. Andrew Walsh got the Red Foxes on the board with 7:06 left in the quarter to make the score 3-1 at the end of the first 15 minutes. Kelly tallied both of his goals, unassisted, at 11:19 and 7:46. Seyer found the back of the cage off a feed from junior Brendan Ryan (Chatham, N.J.) with 8:57 on the clock.
In the second quarter, Marist found the back of the cage first as Bill Duerr scored at 13:13 to get within one goal (3-2). Providence's Ryan put the Friars back ahead by two (4-2) at the 11:24 mark off a feed from junior Henry Pynchon (Ipswich, Mass.). The Red Foxes answered back with a goal from Mike McGuire at the 6:29 mark. Freshman Brad Sieniawski (Litchfield, Ohio) posted his first collegiate goal for the Friars off a feed from Ryan with 4:14 left in the second quarter to give PC a 5-3 advantage going into halftime.
Providence controlled the third quarter by outscoring the Red Foxes, 3-1, to take an 8-4 lead into the fourth quarter. Marist scored the first goal of the third with 12:08 on the clock in a man-up situation to get within one (5-4). PC then rattled off three-straight goals to earn a four-goal advantage. Ryan scored the first two goals for PC. The first goal in the span came with 5:35 remaining in the quarter off an assist from junior Bennett Murphy (Princeton, N.J.). Ryan scored again, unassisted, at 3:49 to put PC up 7-4. Murphy added a goal of his own with 1:37 left on the clock in the third to make the score, 8-4.
The Red Foxes opened the final quarter with two straight goals to get within two (8-6). Pete O'Hara connected at 13:26, unassisted. Jim Wiederhold scored at 9:18 and was assisted by Duerr. PC's Robert Lamontagne (Pittsford, N.Y.) halted the Red Foxes scoring run with a goal at the four-minute mark. Lamontagne was assisted by graduate student Jonathan Hollister (Longmeadow, Mass.) and the goal proved to be the final score of the game as PC won, 9-6.
Junior Peter Littell (Upper Montclair, N.J.) recorded 13 saves for the Friars in goal. Ryan Penner made nine saves for the Red Foxes. Marist outshot Providence, 32-26. Providence held the advantage in groundballs, 20-18.
The Friars will conclude the regular-season schedule on Saturday, April 29 at 1:00 p.m. against Mount St. Mary's.
