Men's Hockey Announces the Signing of Six Student Athletes

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College Hockey Coach Tim Army announced on Thursday, April 20 that student athletes John Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.), David Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.), Chris Eppich (Surrey, B.C.), and Greg Collins (Hingham, Mass.) each have signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Providence College beginning in September 2006. Mark Fayne (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) signed a NLI on November 30, 2005 during the early signing period and Matt Tommasiello (Cranston, R.I.) also has committed to attend Providence College.

John Cavanagh is a 5-foot-9 inch, 170-pound center, who led Salisbury School to the New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association Division I championship. In 28 games, John Cavanagh recorded 44 points on 15 goals and 29 assists. Prior to Salisbury School, he played at Tollgate High School, where he led his team to consecutive Rhode Island Interscholastic League Division I state crowns (2004 and 2005). He was a two-time First Team All-State performer and was the leading scorer in Division I during his last two seasons.

David Cavanagh, the older cousin of John Cavanagh, is a 6-foot-2 inch, 200-pound defenseman, who also played at Salisbury School and helped his squad to the NEPSIHA Division I title. David Cavanagh posted 15 points on two goals and 13 assists in 28 games. Just like John, David enjoyed a successful career at Tollgate, where he guided the Titans to the RIIL Division I state championship in 2004 and 2005. In addition, he was named to the RIIL All-State First Team in his last two seasons.

Eppich recently finished his career with the Chilliwack Chiefs of the British Columbia Hockey League. In 59 games, the 5-foot-10 inch, 175-pound right wing, recorded 80 points on 32 goals and 48 assists. Eppich finished eighth in the BCHL in overall scoring, 14th in goals scored, ninth in assists and sixth in points per game. He was named BCHL Co-Rookie of the Year in 2004-05, and was selected to play in the league's all-star game this past season.

Collins is the third member of the PC incoming freshman class to play at Salisbury School. The 5-foot-11 inch, 185-pound left wing, played in 28 games and recorded 29 points (10 goals, 19 assists) as his squad captured the NEPSIHA Division I title. Prior to Salisbury, Collins spent the 2004-05 season at Thayer Academy, where he served as team captain. That season, Collins finished seventh in the league in scoring with 51 points. While at Thayer Academy, Collins was a teammate of current Friar Pierce Norton and played for former PC alumnus Larry Rooney.

Tommasiello is one of three Rhode Islanders in the incoming freshman class. He is a 5-foot-9 inch, 175-pound left wing, who played for the Bridgewater Bandits of the Eastern Junior Hockey League. In 45 games, Tommasiello totalled 40 points on 14 goals and 26 assists. He served as captain of the Bandits this past season and helped lead the team to its first ever EJHL playoff appearance.

Fayne is a 6-foot-3 inch, 215-pound defenseman who was drafted by the New Jersey Devils in the fifth round (155th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He played for Noble and Greenough School in of the NEPSIHA. In 31 games, Fayne, who served as team captain, recorded 32 points on nine goals and 23 assists. For his efforts, he was named to the NEPSIHA Division I (East) All-Star First Team. He also was named Independent School League Most Valuable Player.

"We are very excited about our incoming freshman class," Head Coach Tim Army said. "As we work towards becoming a more aggressive offensive team, this group of players will help upgrade our overall tempo and creativity as a hockey club. We look forward to integrating this class into our program for the 2006-07 season."
