No. 16/17 Men's Hockey Defeats Brown In Annual Mayor's Cup, 4-2

The Friars earned their third-consecutive Mayor’s Cup victory.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Jonathan Fauchon, Roger McQueen and Julius Sumpf each tallied two points as the No. 16/17 Providence College men's hockey team defeated Brown, 4-2, in the annual Mayor's Cup game on Tuesday (Dec. 9) at Meehan Auditorium.

NOTES

- The Bears opened the scoring 6:36 into the game as Matthew Desiderio finished off a backdoor pass from Andrew King.

- Providence responded just four minutes later as Jonathan Fauchon buried a Roger McQueen rebound on a delayed penalty for his fifth goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. Julius Sumpf earned the secondary assist on the play.

- The Friars took the lead at 14:41 of the first period on Donovan McCoy's first collegiate goal, assisted by Sumpf and Fauchon.

- Roger McQueen extended the Providence lead to 3-1 with a power-play goal, his fifth of the season off a backdoor pass from Kale McCallum. Logan Sawyer also assisted on the play.

- Will Elger appeared to give the Friars a 4-1 lead but the goal was waived off due to goaltender interference.

- Brown's Alex Pineau made it a one-goal game at 3-2 with just 1.7 seconds left in the second period.

- With Shea pulled for an extra attacker, the Friars converted into an empty net for the 4-2 lead. After a shot block by Aleksi Kivioja, Tanner Adams was fouled on an empty net bid and was awarded a goal for his fourth tally of the season.

- Sumpf recorded his first career multi-point game with two assists, while Fauchon and McQueen registered their third multi-point games this season.

- Philip Svedeback has surrendered two or fewer goals in eight of the last 10 games.

- Providence boasts a six-game winning streak at Meehan Auditorium dating back to 2016.
