Piscataway, N.J. - Ryan Soroka had a goal and an assist to lead the St. John's men's soccer team past Providence College, 2-0, in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament at Yurcak Field on the campus of Rutgers University. With the loss, the Friars fall to 13-6-0, while St. John's improves to 12-5-2 and advances to Sunday's BIG EAST championship against the winner of the Rutgers/West Virginia match. Providence, currently ranked 23rd nationally, will now await the announcement of the 48-team NCAA tournament field.
"It is unfortunate, but we'll live for bigger and better things we hope," said Providence head coach Chaka Daley. "Our body of work is good and I hope we've done enough [to make the NCAA Tournament] with 13 wins and nine wins in our league."
The two teams played a defensive first half with the Red Storm holding a slight 4-2 edge in shots. Corner kicks were even at two apiece and each goalkeeper made one save.
Providence's best chance in the first half came when Hadrien Toure (Lyon, France) blasted a shot from just inside the top of the box, but it was stopped by St. John's goalkeeper Jason Landers.
St. John's tallied its first goal at the 58:18 mark. Tadeu Terra stole the ball on a poor clearance and passed it to Soroka who dribbled around Providence goalkeeper Timothy Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) and shot into the empty net from six yards out.
Providence had another great chance with 28:10 left after a corner kick when Timothy Ritter's (Weston, Mass.) shot hit the post.
The Red Storm added an insurance goal with 15:54 left. Soroka passed to Adam Himeno who had a breakaway down the left side. He dribbled and launched a shot from 15 yards out that beat Murray.
Providence continued to pressure St. John's and held an 8-5 advantage in shots for the half and a 10-9 edge for the game. The Friars also held a 3-1 edge in corners in the second half and a 5-3 advantage for the game.
Murray finished with one save for Providence while Landers made four saves for St. John's.
