PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Welcoming the largest freshman class (eight) under the direction of sixth year head coach Margot Royer, the 2005 Providence College volleyball team will be one of the youngest Division I programs in the country.
"This is one of the strongest classes we've had since I've been here," Head Coach Margot Royer said. "Assistant coach Ali Bowman and I set out to bring in a class which focused mainly on players with great ball-control and fundamental skills, and we have definitely accomplished that. This class should help us capitalize on the areas we need to improve on most. Additionally, all of these kids are good players as well as solid students, but most importantly, they are great people."
Joining these eight are four upperclassmen led by senior captain and setter Annie Fiorvanti (Northport, N.Y.). A Division I Independent All-Academic Team selection last year, Fiorvanti led the Friars with 767 assists, averaging 8.45 per game. She also totaled 121 kills and 186 digs during the 2004 campaign. Over her career, Fiorvanti has amassed 1,540 assists and could move into the top-five all-time by the end of her collegiate career.
Senior Allison Baker (Glastonbury, Conn.) also returns to anchor the front line at middle blocker. A transfer to PC her sophomore year, Baker will be counted upon heavily in her third season with the Friars. Having tallied 172 kills as a sophomore, and 171 digs as a junior, both figures this year could equal a winning combination for the Friars.
Sophomores Kasey Adinolfi (Branford, Conn.) and Sarah Fleming (Saint Paul, Minn.) also will be counted on for leadership on and off the court. Having each put forth impressive freshman seasons, the second-year standouts are projected to be leaned upon in starting roles this year.
Rounding out the 2005 squad will be eight freshman including Aida Cadres (Los Angeles, Calif.), Norine Ferguson (Davie, Fla.), Elizabeth Flynn (Bellerose, N.Y.), Kelly Krahenbuhl (Larkspur, Colo.), Amanda Little (Ballston Lake, N.Y.), Brittany Pratte (Redondo Beach, Calif.), Sara Sheehan (West Chester, Pa.) and Jeanette Toney (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
The Friars once again face a national slate of challenging opponents, made up of 35 contests including six tournaments. The Friars open the year in Philadelphia on Sept. 2. PC's home opener is set for Tuesday, September 6th against Siena at 7:00 p.m. The Second Annual Friar Invitational will be held September 16-17 at PC's Mullaney Gymnasium. The Friars also will travel to North Carolina in early November, as well as to Colorado for the first National Independent Volleyball Tournament on November 10-12.
It will be a season of new faces, new places, and new heights for the Friars, and fans should have a lot to cheer about this year in Providence.
