WHO, WHEN, WHERE?... The Providence College men's lacrosse team will face top-ranked Johns Hopkins in the first round of the 2004 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship. The game is scheduled to be played on Saturday, May 15 at 1:00 p.m. at Homewood Field in Baltimore, Md.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS... The Friars and Blue Jays will meet for the first time in men's lacrosse on Saturday, May 15 in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship.

BURDICK VS. PIETRAMALA... Though the Friars and Blue Jays are meeting for the first time, Providence Head Coach Chris Burdick and Hopkins Head Coach Dave Pietramala have faced each other before. During the 2003 STX/USILA North/South All-Star game, Burdick coached the North Team while Pietramala was the coach of the South. The South won the game, 20-15.

WE'VE GOT SOMETHING IN COMMON... The Friars and Blue Jays have one common opponent on the 2004 regular season schedule. Both teams faced Towson. Johns Hopkins defeated the Tigers, 13-8, on May 1, while the Friars dropped a 12-3 decision to Towson in the team's second game of the season on March 1 in Towson, Md.

PROVIDENCE VS. RANKED OPPONENTS IN 2004... The Friars posted an 0-2 record this season against ranked opponents. On March 7, Providence fell to 17th-ranked Towson, 12-3, in Towson, Md. On April 27, PC was defeated by 14th-ranked Brown, 6-3, at home in Providence, R.I.

PROVIDENCE HAS GAME EXPERIENCE AT HOMEWOOD FIELD... The Providence College men's lacrosse team is no stranger to Homewood Field. The Friars played Penn State earlier this season at Homewood Field on March 7. Providence fell to the Nittany Lions, 11-4.

HOW THEY GOT HERE... The Providence College men's lacrosse team won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship - and ultimately the league's automatic bid to the 2004 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament. They entered the MAAC Tournament semifinals as the No. 3 seed and defeated No. 2 seed Canisius College, 10-8, on Friday, May 7 in Buffalo, N.Y. Providence advanced to the MAAC Championship Game, where it defeated No. 4 seed Manhattan College, 11-6, on Sunday, May 9 in Buffalo, N.Y. Junior Dan Giuntini (Floral Park, N.Y.) led the Friar effort against Manhattan with a single-game season high of five points on four goals and one assist. Junior Mark Rotella (Smithtown, N.Y.) won 14-of-20 face-offs in the contest and junior goaltender Andrew McMinn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made 13 saves between the pipes to solidify the victory. Rotella was named Tournament MVP, while sophomore Michael Farley (Westfield, N.J.), senior Brian O'Rorke (Montclair, N.J.), Giuntini and McMinn were named to the All-Tournament Team.

A LONG TIME COMING... The Friars made their fourth-consecutive trip to the MAAC Championship Tournament this season, and just the fourth appearance all-time in the nine years that PC has been affiliated with the league. Prior to this season, the Friars posted an 0-3 mark in MAAC Tournament games. The Friars are now 2-3 all-time in the MAAC Tournament.

HOPKINS WHO?... Johns Hopkins is the top-ranked team in country and enters the NCAA Championship as the top-seed with an 11-1 record this season. The Blue Jays only defeat of the season came at the hands of Virginia, 9-8, in overtime on March 27 in Charlottesville, Va. The Blue Jays hold an impressive all-time record of 831-262-15 (.757) in 116 seasons of play. Johns Hopkins own seven NCAA titles, 29 USILA titles and six ILA titles for a total of 42 national championships. Last season, the Blue Jays finished the year with a 14-2 record and were defeated in the NCAA Championship game, 9-7, by Virginia. Hopkins is 50-25 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and has made 33 consecutive NCAA appearances.

THE OTHER HEAD COACH... Dave Pietramala is in his fourth season as the head coach at Johns Hopkins. He has coached in the collegiate ranks for seven seasons and has a career coaching record of 68-26. He has spent the last four seasons at Johns Hopkins, where his has posted an impressive 45-9 record. Prior to his arrival at Hopkins, Pietramala spent three years at Cornell. He was named USILA National Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2002 and is the only person in the history of collegiate lacrosse to earn NCAA Division I National Player of the Year (1989) and NCAA Division I National Coach of the Year honors (2000 and 2002). Pietramala played lacrosse for Johns Hopkins as an undergraduate.

FIRST THINGS FIRST... The Friars claimed their first-ever MAAC Championship title since joining the league in 1996. The Friars won the Regular-Season MAAC Championship in 2003, but had never claimed a conference tournament crown in the 25-year history of the lacrosse program. Prior to the 2004 season, PC appeared in the MAAC Tournament three times and posted an 0-3 record in MAAC Tournament play. This season, PC posted its first two victories in the MAAC Tournament and now hold a 2-3 all-time record in the tourney.

MORE FIRSTS... The Providence College men's lacrosse team is making its first appearance at the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament in the 25-year history of the program. The Friars are also the only team in the tournament field making their first NCAA appearance.

THE SCHEDULE... The Friars started the 2004 season with three-straight losses to Fairfield (8-7 OT), #17 Towson (12-3) and Penn State (11-4). Since then, PC has won nine of its last 13 games, including victories in each of the last three games.

TURNING TRICKS... The Friars have six players on the 2004 roster who have registered at least one hat trick this season. Junior Dan Giuntini (Floral Park, N.Y.) leads the team with four hat tricks, followed by sophomores Tom Kelly (Henniker, N.H.) and Michael Farley (Westfield, N.J.) who have notched two hat tricks each. Junior Jonathan Hollister (Longmeadow, Mass.), junior Sean Kirwan (Drexel Hill, Pa.) and freshman Mark Bundra (Winnetka, Ill.) have registered one hat trick each this season.

FACE VALUE... Junior Mark Rotella (Smithtown, N.Y.) has given the Friars valuable possessions with an impressive showing as PC's primary face-off man. Rotella has won 131-of-217 face-off opportunities for a .604 face-off percentage. Rotella leads the MAAC in face-off percentage and was ranked ninth in the nation among NCAA Division I players according to the most recent statistics released by the NCAA on May 11. Rotella has won 362-of-654 face-offs in his career for a .554 career face-off percentage. Rotella earned MAAC Tournament Most Valuable Player recognition at the conclusion of the the MAAC Championship game on May 9.

LEADING THE WAY... Junior Dan Giuntini (Floral Park, N.Y.), a two-time First-Team All-MAAC selection (2002, 2004), leads the Friars in scoring this season with 36 points on 29 goals and six assists. He is the only player on the roster who has scored at least one point in all 16 games this season. In just three seasons with Providence (36 games), Giuntini has amassed 86 points on 64 goals and 22 assists. He ranks 20th on PC's all-time career scoring list (86 points). He also ranks 16th all-time in career goals (64) and is one-goal shy of breaking into a three-way tie for 14th all-time. He also is one goal shy of his single-season career high in goals (30). Giuntini leads the team with four hat tricks this season and he also has a team-leading 10 multiple-point games.

POST-SEASON HONORS... The Friars had three players earn All-MAAC honors in 2004. Senior defenseman Brian O'Rorke (Montclair, N.J.) and junior midfielder Dan Giuntini (Floral Park, N.Y.) were named to the First Team. Junior attack Jonathan Hollister (Longmeadow, Mass.) was named to the Second Team. O'Rorke also earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. O'Rorke is PC's most decorated player, earning First Team All-MAAC and Defensive Player of the Year honors for three-straight seasons. In 2001 he was selected as the MAAC Rookie of the Year and has earned All-Tournament Team recognition in each of the last two seasons. Giuntini has been named to the All-MAAC First Team and All-Tournament Team twice during his three-year career (2002, 2004) and Hollister earned league honors for the first time in his career.

BACKBONE OF THE FRIAR "D"... Senior defenseman Brian O'Rorke (Montclair, N.J.) has been the backbone of the Friar defense since his arrival on campus in 2001. He is a three-time First-Team All-MAAC honoree and three-time Defensive Player of the Year award winner, and has earned MAAC All-Tournament Team honors in each of the last two seasons. He is second among his teammates in groundballs (49) and has a total of 169 pick-ups in his career. O'Rorke broke onto the collegiate scene in 2001 and was named MAAC Rookie of the Year.

HELPING HAND... Freshman Brendan Ryan (Chatham, N.J.) is second on the team in scoring this season with 25 points on five goals and a team-leading 20 assists. Ryan has posted five multiple-assist games and has scored at least one point in 14 of Providence's 16 games this season.

D-FENSE, D-FENSE... The Providence College men's lacrosse team is currently ranked third nationally in scoring defense among NCAA Division I men's lacrosse teams according to the latest NCAA statistics released on Tuesday, May 11. The Friars have allowed an average of 6.92 goals per game, through 16 games. Providence also ranks 13th in the nation in man-down defense with an .802 penalty killing percentage.

LET'S FACE IT... As a team, Providence is ranked 16th nationally in face-off percentage (.525). PC's face-off specialists have combined to win 156-of-297 face offs this season. Junior Mark Rotella (Smithtown, N.Y.) leads the charge with 131 victories in 217 face off opportunities for a .604 winning percentage. Rotella currently ranks ninth in the nation among NCAA Division I face-off men with a .604 face-off percentage according to the latest statistics released by the NCAA on Tuesday, May 11.

BETWEEN THE PIPES... Junior Andrew McMinn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) has been the Friars' primary goalkeeper this season. He has played 14 games for a total of 734:51 minutes between the pipes. He has recorded 126 saves and has allowed 89 goals for a .586 save percentage and a 7.27 goals against average. McMinn's current record stands at 8-5. He was named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team this season, and was an All-MAAC Second-Team selection in 2003 as a sophomore. McMinn currently ranks sixth in the nation in goals-against average (7.27) according to the latest statistics released by the NCAA on May 11.

IT'S YOUR TURN... There are seven Friars on the 2004 roster who have scored at least 10 goals this season. There are also seven Friars who have dished out five-or-more assists through 16 games. Junior Dan Giuntini (Floral Park, N.Y.) leads the team in goals with 29, while freshman Brendan Ryan (Chatham, N.J.) leads the Friars in assists (20).

WHERE WILL WE GO FROM HERE... The winner of Saturday's game between Johns Hopkins and Providence will advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals at the University of Virginia on Saturday, May 22. The team that advances will face the winner of the North Carolina vs. Ohio State game.
