Providence College Friars (6-7, 5-2 MAAC): The Providence College men's lacrosse team is scheduled to host Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent Manhattan on Saturday, May 1 at 2:00 p.m. in Providence, R.I. Providence is coming off a hard fought, 6-3, loss to # 14 Brown on Tuesday, April 27. Providence was led offensively by junior Dan Giuntini (Floral Park, N.Y.) and sophomore Michael Farley (Westfield, N.J.) with one goal and one assist each, while fellow junior Andrew McMinn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) started in net for Providence and made 16 saves as his record fell to 6-7 (5-2 MAAC).
Giuntini's 27 points (22 goals, five assists) leads the Friars through 13 games. With his goal on Tuesday Giuntini moved into sole possession of 15th place on the all-time goals scored list at Providence with 57 career tallies. He also is only two points shy of breaking into the top-20 on the all-time career scoring list as a junior. Freshman Brendan Ryan (Chatham, N.J.) is second on the team with 20 points (five goals and 15 assists), while junior Jonathan Hollister (Longmeadow, Mass.) is third with 16 points (nine goals, seven assists). McMinn has been the teams' primary goaltender this season, playing 554:51 minutes in the cage. McMinn has a 7.14 goals against average and a .598 save percentage. McMinn ranked sixth in the nation in goals-against average according to the latest NCAA statistics released on April 26.
Junior Mark Rotella (Smithtown, N.Y.) has taken the majority of the face-offs this season and currently has a .572 face-off percentage (87-152). Rotella ranked 10th in the nation in face-off percentage according to the latest NCAA statistics released on April 26. Senior defenseman Brian O'Rorke (Montclair, N.J.) leads the team with 45 groundballs.
Providence has clinched a spot in the MAAC Championship Tournament for the fourth-straight season. Saturday's game between Manhattan and Providence will decide the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds in the four-team tournament. The winner of Saturday's game will claim the No. 3 seed, while the loser will take the No. 4 seed. The MAAC Tournament semifinal games are on Friday, May 7 (1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.) and the winners will advance to the Championship game at Noon on Sunday, May 9. The winner of the MAAC Tournament receives the league's automatic bid to the 2004 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Tournament.
Manhattan College (7-5, 5-2 MAAC): Manhattan enters Saturday's match up against Providence with a 7-5 overall record and a 5-2 mark in MAAC play. Manhattan is led in scoring this season by Eugene Tanner with 13 goals and 20 assists for 33 points. Justin Otto is second with 32 points on 25 goals and seven assists, while Brian Murray is third with 10 goals and 14 assists. Otto leads the team in goals (25), while Tanner leads the team in assists (20). Goalkeeper Robert Busweiler has played the majority of minutes for the Jaspers posting a 5-2 overall record with a .544 save percentage and a 9.45 goals against average.
