Men's Lacrosse Remains Unbeaten In The MAAC

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Canisius, 5-4, in overtime in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match-up on Monday, March 31 in Providence, R.I. Sophomore John Hollister (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal, unassisted, just 1:44 into the four-minute overtime period. With the victory, Providence improves to 2-4 overall and remains unbeaten in the MAAC at 2-0.

Providence took a 1-0 lead in the first quarter as freshman Tom Kelly (Henniker, N.H.) scored his first of two goals on the day at the 6:41 mark. Sophomore David Krasnica (Mendham, N.J.) was credited with the assist. Canisius rallied in the second quarter with two-straight goals, while holding the Friars scoreless to take a 2-1 advantage. Steve Muskopf connected on a goal with 12:16 on the clock off an assist from Greg Campbell, followed by Mark Miyashita's unassisted goal at 11:13. The Golden Griffins took a 2-1 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, PC's Ryan Russell evened the score (2-2) at the 10:01 mark off an assist from senior Jon Meehan (Peabody, Mass.). The Golden Griffins regained the lead (3-2) with 7:38 remaining in the third quarter as Miyashita connected on his second goal of the day on a pass from Campbell. The Friars tied the game 3-3 as Kelly scored his second goal of the afternoon, unassisted, with 2:20 remaining in the third.

In the fourth quarter, Canisius struck first to take a 4-3 lead just 54 seconds into the session. R.J. Ramgopal was credited with the goal off an assist from Miyashita. PC junior Kevin Kornobis (Merrick, N.Y.) tied the game and forced overtime with just 6:21 left in regulation, as he connected off a pass from Hollister.

After a two minute break, PC's Brian O'Rorke (Montclair, N.J.) won the initial face off and the Friars called a time-out with 3:56 on the clock. It was just the fourth face-off victory of the game for the Friars in 13 attempts. One minute and 12 seconds later, Hollister set up at the top of the box and took the ball to the cage for the game-winning goal.

Providence goaltender Andrew McMinn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned the win with a game-high eight saves. Canisius' Thomas Kucharczak made seven saves for the Griffins in the losing effort.

Providence (2-4, 1-0 MAAC) will host Hartford in non-conference action on Wednesday, April 2. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Glay Field on the campus of Providence College in Providence, R.I.
