Men's Lacrosse Crushes Holy Cross

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Holy Cross, 19-4, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday, April 17 in Providence, R.I. The Friars improve to 8-4 overall on the season, and become the first PC men's lacrosse team to win eight games since 1988, when Providence finished the year 8-4.

Freshman Frank Bosco (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) led the Friars with four goals. Freshman Dan Giuntini (Flora Park, N.Y.) scored a game-high six points on three goals and three assists. Senior Kyle Ojakian (Cheshire, Conn.) registered five points on one goal and a game-high four assists. Junior Skip Dunphy (Manhasset, N.Y.) netted one goal and added three assists. Junior Jon Meehan (Peabody, Mass.) and sophomore Kevin Kornobis (Merrick, N.Y.) each recorded two goals and one assist. Junior David Kole (Montclair, N.J.), seniors Tom McLoughlin (Yorktown, N.Y.) and Chris Houston (Garden City, N.Y.), sophomores Ryan Russell (Montvale, N.J.) and Ryan Phillips (Upper Montclair, N.J.) and freshman Sean Kirwan (Drexel Hill, Pa.) each scored one goal in the effort. Freshman David Krasnica (Mendham, N.J.) recorded two assists.

Holy Cross jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal from Joe Stefans at the 13:29 mark of the first quarter. Providence rallied to score five-straight goals, to take a 5-1 lead. The Crusaders cut the lead to three goals, as Dave McWilliams connected on an assist from Paul Washington, with 3:16 remaining in the first. The Friars closed the quarter with two more goals to take a 7-2 lead.

The Friars continued to dominate in the second quarter, taking a 11-2 lead before Holy Cross was able to score with 55-seconds remaining in the first half. HC's Shaun McGowan was credited with the goal. Providence went into halftime with a 12-3 lead after Kornobis tallied a goal with 15-seconds remaining.

The third quarter was all Providence as the Friars held Holy Cross scoreless, en route to scoring five more goals of their own. PC entered the fourth quarter with a 17-3 advantage. In the fourth and final quarter, Holy Cross scored it's fourth and final goal of the game at the 13:05 mark. McWilliams scored the Crusader goal, and was assisted by Tim Walsh. With 9:15 left in the game PC's Phillips scored from Kornobis, an Kirwan put the nail in the coffin on an assist from Ojakian with 1:15 remaining in the game to take the 19-4 win.

Providence will host Manhattan in MAAC action on Saturday, April 20 at 2:00 p.m., in Providence, R.I. The Friars will close out the regular-season schedule with two home games against Brown on Wednesday, April 24 (4:00 p.m.) and Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, April 27 (1:00 p.m.).
