Men's Lacrosse Players Earn MAAC All-Academic Honors

EDISON, N.J. - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced it's selections for the 2001 MAAC Men's Lacrosse All-Academic Team on Friday, May 4.

Senior Steve Farina (Port Washington, N.Y.), juniors Mark Brady (North Providence, R.I.), John McCullough (Glen Head, N.Y.) and Tom McLoughlin (Yorktown, N.Y.) and sophomore Matt Berk (Glencoe, Ill.) represented Providence on the 26-player Academic Team. Quinnipiac had the highest total of student-athletes selected with six, followed by Providence (5), Canisius (4) and Manhattan (3). Marist, Mount St. Mary's, Sacred Heart and Siena rounded out the team with two student-athletes each.

To be eligible for MAAC All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must have completed two semesters at their institution, be a significant contributor as a starter or key reserve, and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 on a 4.00 scale.

Farina, a 2000 MAAC All-Academic selection, currently has a 3.51 GPA in English. He played in seven of the Friars' 15 games this season and registered three groundballs. He is the son of Nancy and Sal Farina.

Brady, has earned an impressive 4.00 in Biology. His GPA stands as the highest of the 26 student-athletes selected on the Academic Team. He played in 12 games, registered 13 groundballs, and won 40 of his 101 face-off opportunities for a face-off percentage of .396. He is the son of Alice and Raymond Brady.

McCullough is a Finance major with a 3.26 GPA. McCullough played in all 16 games for the Friars and led the team with 78 groundballs. He is the son of John and Kathy McCullough.

McLoughlin has earned a 3.27 GPA in History. He played in 13 games this season and tallied his first collegiate points on four goals and two assists. He is the son of Thomas and Pamela McLoughlin.

Berk rounds out the All-Academic selections with a 3.94 GPA in Finance. He played in 15 games for the Friars as a long-stick defenseman and tallied 16 groundballs. He is the son of Diane and Andy Berk.

Providence finished the season with a 7-9 record, and earned its first-ever invitation to post-season play with a 5-4 mark (fourth place) in the MAAC. The Friars were eliminated in the semifinals, 13-2, by top-seed Quinnipiac College on Saturday, May 5. Sophomore attack Jon Meehan (Peabody, Mass.) was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
