EDISON, N.J. - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced it's selections for the 2001 All-MAAC post-season honors at the MAAC Championship banquet, held in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Friday, May 4.
Freshman Brian O'Rorke (Montclair, N.J.) and junior Kyle Ojakian (Cheshire, Conn.) became the first Providence College players to earn MAAC honors in the college's six-year membership with the Conference.
O'Rorke, a 6-3, 225-pound, long-stick defender, was honored as Rookie of the Year. He has played in all 15 games for the Friars this season, and is third on the team with 39 groundballs. Head Coach Chris Burdick defines O'Rorke as the team's "best take-away man". O'Rorke lettered in lacrosse and ice hockey at Montclair High School. He captained both teams during his senior year. He was a two-time All-State selection in lacrosse, and earned All-Conference honors in hockey. He is the son of Richard and Mary-Ann O'Rorke.
Ojakian, a First-Team All-MAAC selection, finished the regular season first ont he team in assists (39) and points (47). He also ranks seventh in goals (8). He ranks first in the nation among NCAA Division I players in assists per game with 2.79. Ojakian set the single-season assist record at Providence during the final regular-season game against Siena. He is 13th all-time at PC in career assists, after just one season. Ojakian spent two years at Dean College before transferring to Providence in the fall of 2000. At Dean, he set the single-season assist record with 55 in 2000 and ranks first all-time in career assists with 85. He attended Cheshire High School, and is the son of Jacki and Mark Ojakian.
The Friars finished the season with a 7-8 record overall and fourth in the MAAC with a 5-4 mark. The team's fourth-place finish earned PC it's first-ever post-season appearance in the MAAC Championship Tournament. The team is scheduled to face top-seed Quinnipiac in the semifinals on Saturday, May 5, at 12:00 p.m. in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
