Friar Golfers Finish Eighth At BIG EAST Tournament

South Bend, Ind. - The Providence College golf team wrapped up the 2000 spring golf season with an eighth place finish at the BIG EAST Championships on Sunday afternoon. The Friars shot a two-day total of 317-315-632 on the par 71, 6,744-yard Warren Golf Course on the Notre Dame campus.

The Friars finished five strokes ahead of ninth place Boston College (309-328-637) and five strokes behind seventh place Georgetown (311-316-627). Seton Hall won the tournament with a sparkling, 36-hole total of 290-290-580 to finish just 12-over par for the tournament.

Providence was led by junior Ben Bridgeo (Southbridge, Mass.) who fired a two-day total of 73-78-151. That tied him for 17th and put him ten strokes off the pace set by individual champion Eugene Smith of Seton Hall who shot a one-under par, 69-72-141. He edged Rutgers' Daniel Lee who after opening with a 76 on Saturday, fired a BIG EAST tournament record five-under par 66 on Sunday to finish at even par 142.

Following Bridgeo for the Friars was sophomore Chris Tobey (Hopkinton, Mass.) who shot 79 each day for a 158 which tied him for 27th overall. Junior Chris Hynes (Warwick, R.I.) tied for 34th with an 82-79-161 while Justin Monahan (Jr., Winchester, Mass.) finished in a tie for 36th with an 83-79-162. Dean Cashman (Jr., Etna, N.H.) closed out the Friars' five golfers with a 45th place finish as he shot a 90-90-180 over the two-day tournament.
