New Seabury, Mass. - The University of Rhode Island defended its title in the New England Intercollegiate Golf Championships by firing a 36-hole total of 279-291-570, the lowest total in the tournament's 64-year history. URI was 42 strokes ahead of second place Central Connecticut and 44 ahead of third place Providence. The Friars turned in a two-day total of 298-316-614 on the par-71 course at New Seabury Country Club on Cape Cod.
URI's Justin Thompson was the individual medalist with a three-under par 139 (69-70). PC's top finisher was senior Rich Dichard (Nashua, N.H.) who fired a 36-hole total of 149 (75-74). He was followed by Chris Hynes (So., Warwick, R.I.) with a 75-79-154; Justin Monohan (So., Winchester, Mass.) who had a 74-84-158; senior Rob Brennan (Springfield, Mass.) was fourth among the Friars with a 74-84-158 and Dean Cashman (So., Etna, N.H.) had an 81-79-160.
The Friars third place finish came from a field of 48 and was also third among the 15 Division I schools in New England.
Providence returns to action on the final weekend of October when the Friars compete in the BIG EAST Championships in Potomac, Maryland, October 31 and November 1.
