Pittsburgh, Pa. - Freshman forward Cande Ruiz scored two goals and assisted on a third to lead the University of Pittsburgh to a 3-2 win over the Providence College Friars on Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh. PC was led by senior forward Patricia Moore who scored twice in the game for the Friars.
Ruiz set up Pitt's first goal at just 3:11 into the game as she set up Brigid Handforth for a 1-0 lead. Ruiz made it 2-0 at 21:45 when she beat PC's Shayna Ross from the right side. Moore got the Friars back in the game less than two minutes later when she converted a Jill Flanagan pass for a 2-1 score. Pitt made it 3-1 before the half when Ruiz put a shot under the crossbar at 43:11.
The lone goal of the second half came off a Moore blast that beat Pitt's Nicole Bashor at 61:57 for a 3-2 score. That marks the second time this season and the third time in her career that Moore has scored two goals in a game. The defenses tightened and PC could not score again.
Pitt outshot the Friars by a 19-18 margin. Shayna Ross made eight saves for Providence while Bashor stopped nine for the Panthers.
The loss drops PC to 2-8 on the year, 2-5 in the BIG EAST. Pittsburgh is now 6-5 overall and 5-2 in the BIG EAST.
Providence returns to action on Wednesday, October 7th when they host Holy Cross in a 3:00 p.m. game at Glay Field.
