BAYAMON, Puerto Rico (AP) - Providence can leave the Puerto Rico Shootout with some hope and a few good omens after breaking the team scoring record in a 120-60 victory over American University-P.R. Saturday.

Romuald Augustin's slam dunk with 44 seconds left enabled the Friars to surpass the mark set Jan. 20, 1973 in a 118-88 victory over Western Kentucky. The only Providence team to come close before this was the 1987 team, which scored 113 in a win over Maine.

Both those clubs made the Final Four.

Providence (2-3), picked to finish in the bottom half of the Big East this season, will need some miracles to match that. But after losses to No. 3 Michigan State and Virginia - and former coach Pete Gillen - the Friars felt good after their latest victory.

It was the first time the Friars scored 100 points since a 100-88 victory over LIU three years ago.

Erron Maxey made 12 of 15 field goals for 25 points in leading Providence. Abdul Mills added 20 points and Donta Wade 18.

The Friars had 25 assists, eight by Jamaal Camah, were 11-of-24 on 3-pointers and shot 61.7 percent (50-of-81) from the field.

Joseph Rodriguez scored 21 for American (0-3), an NCAA Division II school that has lost 11 straight games in its two holiday tournaments since upsetting Arkansas 64-59 in December 1997.

American, which got blown out from the start against No. 18 DePaul and Arizona State in its first two tournament games, was within 26-19 with 10 minutes gone. Then Mills hit a 3-pointer, Augustin made a tip-in and David Murray scored on a three-point play for the Friars.

They eventually took a 57-36 lead on Mills' basket just before halftime and dominated in the second half, going on an 18-0 run after the break.

Wade's jumper with 1:08 left tied the 1973 club's record and Augustin broke it with a final flourish.
