PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Erron Maxey scored 12 points to lead four teammates in double figures as Providence defeated Rhode Island 62-49 on Tuesday night.
Providence (4-4) held Rhode Island (3-4) to 30 percent shooting and forced 24 turnovers.
Zach Marbury led Rhode Island with 19 points. Rams leading scorer Luther Clay, who averages 15 points per game, scored 9 points.
Jamaal Camah and Marcus Jefferson scored 11 points each for Providence. David Murray added 10.
Rhode Island led just twice. Their largest lead was three points, after a 3-pointer by Marbury to open the game. Providence led 28-18 at halftime, after holding the Rams to 24 percent shooting and forcing 15 turnovers.
Providence took its biggest lead, 34-20, early in the second half. Rhode Island scored 10 consecutive points over the next two minutes, including seven by Marbury, to trim the lead to 34-30.
But poor free-throw shooting hurt Rhode Island. The Rams made 3-of-10 free throws over a six-minute span in the second half.
The Friars stretched the lead to 14 and made 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to capture the victory.
Providence now leads the all-time series between the intrastate rivals 61-49.
