Jaylin Sellers led Providence on his senior night with 18 points.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team lost to the Marquette University Golden Eagles (11-19, 6-13 BIG EAST), 78-56, on Wednesday, March 4, at The Amica Mutual Pavilion, in Providence, R.I. With the loss, Providence fell to 14-16 overall and 7-12 in BIG EAST play. Graduate student Jaylin Sellers (Columbus, Ga.) led the Friars with 18 points. Sophomore Ryan Mela (Natick, Mass.) chipped in with 17.
FIRST HALF:
• After Marquette opened on an 8-0 run, Jaylin Sellers stepped into a three-pointer as the shot clock woud down to make it 8-3 (16:46).
• On the following possession, Jason Edwards got his night started when he converted on an eight-footer in the lane to cut into the lead heading into the first media timeout (15:44).
• Sellers and Ryan Mela both knocked down a pair of free throws to make it 14-8, Marquette (13:08).
• Over the next five minutes of action, Marquette went on a 14-1 scoring run as the Golden Eagles took a 28-10 lead (7:56).
• Sellers connected a three from the corner, marking the first Providence field goal in over seven minutes of play (6:03).
• Sellers knocked down another three on the next possession to cut the deficit to 14. 30-16, Marquette (5:39).
• Jason Edwards was able to get by his man and finish at the rim to make it 33-21, Marquette with under three minutes to go in the half (2:59).
• Oswin Erhunmwunse (Benin City, Nigeria) gathered a Providence missed free throw and was able to put it back in for his first basket of the night, making it 37-23.
• Marquette led at the half, 37-23.
• Providence shot 6-22 (27.3%) from the field, 3-13 (23.1%) from three, and 8-13 (61.5%) from the free-throw line.
• Marquette shot 14-30 (46.7%) from the field, 5-16 (31.3%) from three, and 4-5 (80.0%) from the free-throw line.
• Sellers led all scorers in the first half with 11 points on three threes.
• Providence led the rebound battle 19-18 at the half.
• Erhunmwunse grabbed seven rebounds in the first half.
SECOND HALF:
• After Marquette opened the second half with a triple, the Friars answered back with a Mela layup. The Golden Eagles still owned a double-digit lead (17:51).
• Marquette would then make its next four field goals; Mela slowed the run by hitting a pair at the line to trim the Marquette lead, 47-29 into the media-timeout (15:48).
• Out of a review, Providence found Nilavan Daniels (St. Louis, Mo.) on a slip to the rim for two. Marquette led 52-31 (13:20).
• Marquette continued to control the game on both ends, Sellers knocked down a three in rhythm to make it 58-36, Golden Eagles (9:41).
• The Friars continued to fight late in the game. Mela added to his strong second-half with two three-pointers in three possessions. The next time down the floor, Mela ran the break and finished with a finger roll to make it 65-49, Marquette (5:07).
• Marquette was able to earn the season sweep and win 76-56.
HIGHLIGHTS:
• Providence shot 17-55 (30.9%) from the field, 7-30 (23.3%) from three, and 15-21 (71.4%) from the free-throw line.
• Marquette shot 26-58 (44.8%) from the field, 9-28 (32.1%) from three, and 17-21 (81.0%) from the free-throw line.
• Two players finished in double figures for the Friars - Sellers (18) and Mela (17) led the Friars.
•Mela recorded 15 in the second half.
• Adrien Stevens finished with 21 points for Marquette to lead all scorers.
