Men’s Basketball Falls To Georgetown In Its Regular Season Finale, 80-79

Jaylin Sellers captured the BIG EAST Conference regular-season scoring title.


WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the Georgetown University Hoyas (14-17, 6-14 BIG EAST), 80-79, on Saturday, March 7 at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. With the loss, Providence fell to 14-17 overall and 7-13 in BIG EAST play. Jaylin Sellers (Columbus, Ga.) scored a team-high 21 points and claimed the BIG EAST Conference regular-season scoring title. He is the ninth Friar and first since Devin Carter in 2024 to capture the league scoring title.  Providence secured the nine seed in the BIG EAST Tournament and will face No. 8 seed Butler on Wednesday, March 11, at 4 p.m. at Madison Square Garden.  
 
"It was a tough finish, but I liked our spirit after the intermission and thought our guys came out with a lot of fight in the second half," said Providence College Head Coach Kim English. "I'm looking forward to playing Butler in the best basketball stadium in the world."
 
FIRST HALF: 
• Georgetown controlled the opening tip action with a second-chance layup. Jamier Jones (Sarasota, Fla.) got into the paint and scored a layup of his own to match the Hoyas (19:03).
•  Sellers and Stefan Vaaks (Tabasalu, Estonia) each sank threes for the Friars and sparked an 8-0 scoring run as Providence jumped out to a 10-5 lead (15:38).
• Oswin Erhunmwunse (Benin City, Nigeria) found a cutting Vaaks for an easy dunk at the rim. The Hoyas responded with a bucket inside and cut the Friars' lead to one at 14-13 before the under-12 media timeout (11:17).
• The Hoyas sparked a 6-0 scoring run with three straight makes on the offensive end and took a 19-17 lead (9:26).
• The Hoyas continued to control the game, holding the Friars scoreless over the next two and a half minutes and jumped out to a 26-19 lead (6:57).
• Ryan Mela (Natick, Mass.) stopped the Georgetown run with a layup. The Hoyas responded with a three-pointer and took a 33-21 lead (4:49).
• Jones finished a layup through contact and converted the and-one opportunity to cut into Georgetown's lead. The Hoyas immediately responded with an emphatic dunk and extended the lead back out to 10 at 37-27 (3:41).
• As the teams traded buckets, Jason Edwards (Atlanta, Ga.) sank a three-pointer. Georgetown scored a two, and Sellers responded with a two-point bank shot with five seconds remaining. Providence trailed 43-33 at the half.
• Providence shot 11-26 (42.3%) from the field, 4-13 (30.8%) from three, and 8-12 (66.7%) from the free-throw line.   
• Georgetown shot 15-28 (53.6%) from the field, 2-8 (25.0%) from three, and 11-13 (84.6%) from the free-throw line.    
• Jones led the Friars with nine first-half points. The Friars had no scorers in double figures in the first half.
• Georgetown's Vince Iwuchukwu led all scorers with 12 points. Malik Mack tallied 11 points for the Hoyas.
• Providence outrebounded Georgetown 15-12, including a 6-3 margin on the offensive glass.
• Georgetown dominated the paint in the first half, outscoring Providence 24-10.
• The Hoyas scored 18 points off 12 Providence first-half turnovers.
 
SECOND HALF: 
• Sellers opened the second half with a jumper. Georgetown carried its offensive momentum into the second half with another easy two in the paint and took a 45-39 lead (18:20).
• The Friars found a rhythm on offense and took back the lead. Sellers, Mela and Vaaks scored on six straight trips down the floor. Vaaks and Sellers sank back-to-back threes during the scoring outburst as the Friars took a 52-49 lead (15:38).
• Georgetown continued to get to the rim and slammed a dunk in transition that cut Providence's lead to one. Mela sank back-to-back threes as Providence led 59-55 (12:12).
• Through the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Friars outscored Georgetown 28-12 on five made threes. All of the Hoyas' 12 second-half points were scored inside the paint.

• Georgetown sparked a 6-0 scoring run and took back the lead with an emphatic dunk. The Hoyas extended the run to 10-0 and took an 80-75 lead.
• Sellers sank his fifth three-pointer of the game and moved his scoring total to 21 points. The three cut Georgetown's lead to 80-78 (2:18).
• The scoring stalled for the next two minutes. Trailing by two, Providence forced a stop with eight seconds remaining to earn one final possession. Jones got to the free-throw line on a putback attempt but made one of two attempts.
• Georgetown held on for an 80-79 lead at the final buzzer. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS: 
• Providence shot 27-56 (48.2%) from the field, 13-30 (43.3%) from three, and 12-18 (66.7%) from the free-throw line.   
• Georgetown shot 31-59 (52.5%) from the field, 5-15 (33.3%) from three, and 13-15 (86.7%) from the free-throw line.    
• Four players finished in double figures for the Friars: Sellers (21), Jones (19), Mela (17) and Vaaks (11).
• Sellers scored a team-high 21 points on five made three-pointers. It marked his 11th game this season with 20 or more points.
• Sellers captured the BIG EAST regular-season scoring title. He became just the ninth Providence player to achieve the feat.
• Mela tied a career high with three made three-pointers.
• Erhunmwunse grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. It marked the 13th time this season he has tallied 10 or more rebounds.
• Providence made 13 three-pointers in the game. The Friars have made 10 or more threes 17 times this season.
• Georgetown's Vince Iwuchukwu led all scorers with 25 points and added 10 rebounds.
• Providence outrebounded Georgetown 38-25.• The Hoyas tallied 37 bench points.
• Georgetown scored 29 points off 22 Providence turnovers.

The Friars will be back in action when they travel to New York, N.Y. to face No. 8 seed Butler in the BIG EAST Conference tournament. The game is set to tip off on Wednesday, March 11, at 4:00 p.m. in Madison Square Garden. The game will be streamed live on Peacock.
