OMAHA, Neb. - The Providence College men's basketball team defeated the Creighton University Bluejays (14-16, 8-11 BIG EAST), 79-76, on Saturday, Feb. 28 at The CHI Health Center, in Omaha, Neb. With the win, Providence improved to 14-15 overall and 7-11 in BIG EAST play. Graduate student

Jason Edwards (Atlanta, Ga.) added 18 points for the Friars.

FIRST HALF:
• Creighton opened the game's scoring action with a mid-range jumper.
Ryan Mela (Natick, Mass.) knocked down a three-pointer as the Friars held an early 3-2 lead (18:42).
• After Mela sank a pair of free-throws that gave him an early four points, Creighton sank a three prior to the under-16 media timeout. Providence led 7-5 at the first stoppage (15:49).

Jaylin Sellers knocked down a three-pointer, scoring his first points of the game. The Bluejays followed with three of their own and tied the game at 10 (14:16).

Nilavan Daniels sank back-to-back three-pointers as the Friars jumped out to a 24-16 lead (8:50).
• As Creighton found a rhythm on offense, they went on a 8-0 scoring run and tied the game at 28.
Jamier Jones (Sarasota, Fla.) stopped Creighton's run with a layup through contact. Providence led 30-28 (5:04).
• Both teams escalated the defensive intensity for the next two minutes as neither team allowed a basket. Sellers broke the stalemate with a mid-range jumper, and Creighton followed with a straight-away three as the Friars led 32-31 (2:30).
• Jones found his way into the paint again for an and-one layup and sank the free-throw that followed as Providence held a closely contested 35-33 lead (1:39).
• The scoring swung back and forth as Creighton tied the game at 37. Edwards beat his man to the basket and scored a layup that gave the Friars a 39-37 advantage at the half.
• Providence shot 16-30 (53.3%) from the field, 4-9 (44.4%) from three, and 3-3 (100.0%) from the free-throw line.
• Creighton shot 14-33 (42.4%) from the field, 5-14 (35.7%) from three, and 4-4 (100.0%) from the free-throw line.
• Edwards led all scorers in the first half with 10 points. He was the only player to record double figures after 20 minutes.
• Creighton led the rebound battle, 19-14, at the half.
• Erhunmwunse chipped in four rebounds at the half.
SECOND HALF:
• Creighton opened the second half with a bucket on the first possession of the final 20 minutes. Sellers responded back-to-back threes as he entered double figures with 13 points. Providence led 45-42 (18:39).
• Creighton sank a three and cur the Friars' lead to one. Erhunmwunse followed with a block on defense, followed by an emphatic dunk as Providence led 53-48 (13:56).
• Providence continued to get inside the paint as Jones slammed a driving dunk and extended the Friars' lead to 55-51 (13:01). It marked the team's eighth point in the paint out of its 16 second-half total.
• Creighton responded with an 8-2 run and took a 56-55 lead (11:42).
• After Edwards sank a pair of free throws to regain the lead, Sellers sank his fourth three of the game as Providence led 60-56 (10:18).
• Sellers extended the Friars' scoring streak to a 7-0 run with a layup through contact as the Friars held a 62-56 lead. Sellers accounted for five of the seven points in the run (9:05).
• Creighton took just its second lead of the game with an alley-oop jam. Sellers tied the game at 64 with a layup (6:19).
• Edwards found Erhunmwunse in open space in the paint for a dunk and extended the Friars' lead. Creighton buried another three, but Sellers responded with his fifth three of the game and gave the Friars a 69-67 lead (4:55).
• As the scoring went back and forth, Edwards made a floater in the lane that gave the Friars a 73-69 lead. The bucket marked a 9-2 scoring run for the Friars (2:54).
• Mela broke the Bluejays' press with a layup that gave the Friars a 77-71 lead with 1:11 remaining in regulation.
• After turning Providence over in a full-court press, Creighton converted an and-one opportunity and trimmed the Friars' lead to one. Providence led 77-76 with 40 seconds remaining in regulation.
• Sellers split the Bluejays' defense for a layup and extended the Friars' lead to 79-76 with 15 seconds left in the game. It marked Sellers' 20th second-half points.
• Creighton missed two three-pointers in the game's final possession as Providence held onto a 79-79 lead for the win.
HIGHLIGHTS:
• Providence shot 32-63 (50.8%) from the field, 8-19 (42.1%) from three, and 7-8 (87.5%) from the free-throw line.
• Creighton shot 26-61 (42.6%) from the field, 9-27 (33.3%) from three, and 15-17 (88.2%) from the free-throw line.
• Three players finished in double figures for the Friars: Sellers (27), Edwards (18) and Mela (11).
• Sellers led all scorers with 27 points. He has scored 20 points or more in six out of the last seven games.
• Sellers recorded 25 or more points for the seventh time this season.
• Sellers scored 20 of his 27 points in the second half.
• Erhunmwunse blocked three shots in the game.
• Erhunmwunse grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. He has recorded 10 or more rebounds in 10 of the last 12 games.
• Josh Dix and Austin Swartz led the Bluejays in scoring with 18 points each.
• The Friars held the advantage in turnovers, only conceding seven to the Bluejays' 10
• Creighton won the rebound battle, 34-33.
• Providence dominated the paint, outscoring Creighton inside by a margin of 40-26.
• The Friars total of 79 points marked the most points Providence has scored at Creighton since Dec. 17, 1964, when the Friars defeated the Bluejays 95-90. It also marks the most points the Friars have scored against Creighton in a BIG EAST game.
• The game featured nine lead changes and 13 ties.
• The Friars have now won three straight BIG EAST games for the first time this season and the first time since the 2023-24 season.
