Bryan Hodgson coached Pino at Buffalo and worked with him at Alabama.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College men's basketball Head Coach Bryan Hodgson announced today (July 2) the hiring of Christian Pino to his staff as the recruiting coordinator. Hodgson coached Pino at the University of Buffalo and worked with him at the University of Alabama.
For the last five years, Pino has served as the director of player development and recruiting coordinator at Alabama. Pino began his tenure at Alabama as a graduate assistant with the men's basketball program from 2019-21. During his seven years with the Crimson Tide, the team won two SEC Regular Season titles and two SEC Tournament championships, while advancing to one Final Four, five Sweet 16s and two Elite Eights. Â
As the director of player development, he was responsible for helping with skill development, as well as assisting with practice plans and game charts. Pino also maintained the team's recruiting database and presentations. He assisted the coaching staff with opponent's scouts. During his time at Alabama, he was responsible for the development of future NBA players Herb Jones, Josh Primo and Alex Reese, as well as Jaden Shackelford, who played in the NBA G League.
From 2019-23, Pino worked with Hodgson with opponents' personnel and scouting as the Crimson Tide finished third in the nation in defensive efficiency in two of the four years. In 2024, Alabama advanced to the Final Four. Pino assisted with the team's offense, which finished the season ranked No. 2 in the country. He also recruited on and off campus from 2023-26.
"I coached Christian at the University of Buffalo and I worked on the coaching staff with him at Alabama," Hodgson said. "Christian has been associated with championship caliber basketball programs since he was in high school. He knows the work, the dedication and the sacrifice required to have success. He has spent the last seven years at Alabama and we are excited that he is joining us in Friartown." Â
Pino began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Seaholm High School in 2018-19.
Pino attended Romulus High School where he played for Head Coach Nate Oats and helped lead the team to a 27-1 mark and a Michigan Class A state title in 2013. Following graduation, he played one season at Arizona State under Head Coach Herb Sendek. He transferred to Buffalo for his final three seasons. At Buffalo, he helped the team capture MAC Tournament titles in 2015 and 2016 and earn consecutive NCAA Tournament berths.
