Friar Sports Collect Three Big East Athlete of the Week Awards

Chris Riccobono (So., Franklin Lakes, N.J.)...Riccobono posted a 4-0 mark in the No. 3 singles spot for the men's tennis team.

Marc DesRoches (Sr., Cambridge, Mass.)...DesRoches was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week as he was 2-0 on the week with a two-hit complete game shutout at Seton Hall and won in relief versus Boston College.

Sarah Dupre (Sr., Kingston, Ontario)... Dupre won the 1,500 meters at the UConn Spring Invitational on April 17th in a time of 4:31.71 and qualified for the ECAC Championship.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK... The women's track team scored 43 points and finished fifth of seven teams at the UConn Spring Invitational III on April 17 at Storrs, Conn. The Friars were led by senior Sarah Dupre (Kingston, Ontario), senior Gladys Ganiel (Harrington, Maine) and junior Dana Ostrander (Ballston Lake, N.Y.). Dupre won the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:31.71. Ganiel won the 3,000 meters (10:03.74) and Ostrander captured the 5,000 meters (17:14.19). Ganiel qualified for the New England Championship and Ostrander qualified for the ECAC Championship.

LACROSSE (1-10, 1-6) ... The Friars recorded a 1-2 mark last week. PC earned its first win of the season with a 7-6 victory at Siena on April 12. Senior Matt Pymm (Port Washington, N.Y.) led the Friar offense with two goals. Senior goaltender Rob Chambers (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) made 19 stops in the win. On April 14, Quinnipiac earned a 12-10 win against PC. Sophomore Jim Dooley (Maplewood, N.J.) and junior Ken Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.) each scored three goals for the Friars. Chambers and freshman Kevin Sweeney (South Salem, N.Y.) combined to make 18 saves. On April 18, Canisius defeated the Friars, 11-10, in overtime at Glay Field. Leahy led the Friar offense with four goals. Chambers and junior Brian McCarthy (Townsend, Mass.) combined to make 23 stops.

SOFTBALL (10-29, 1-5)...The Friars were 2-6 last week, splitting with Holy Cross and St. John's while getting swept at Brown and Seton Hall. In the Holy Cross win, JAMI SERVIDONE (Jr., Rensselaer, N.Y.) was 1-3 with two rbi's while starting pitcher ROBYN WEST (So., Gansevoort, N.Y.) was 2-3 with an rbi at the plate. She went seven innings to get the win. The Friars picked up their first BIG EAST win on Saturday as they defeated St. John's, 8-6 in eight innings. Servidone delivered a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to give PC the win. She was 1-4 with three rbi's in the game. KERRI JACKLETS (So., Sayville, N.Y.) was 3-5 with a home run and three rbi's in the game. The Friars' catcher was 5-10 in BIG EAST action on the week.

BASEBALL (33-12/9-7)...The Friars jumped into fourth place in the BIG EAST on the strength of four BIG EAST wins with just one loss. PC started the week with a rain out makeup game at Georgetown on Monday which they won 8-1. On Wednesday, the Friars rallied from an 8-4 deficit to beat Boston College, 9-8 in ten innings. MARC DesROCHES (Sr., Cambridge, Mass.) pitched the final 1-and-2/3 innings to get the win. JAMIE ATHAS (Fr., Holyoke, Mass.) drove in the tying and winning runs in the game. On Thursday, PC lost at Harvard, 13-6. At Seton Hall on Saturday, it was again Marc DesRoches as the senior righhander pitched himself to BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors as he threw a two-hit shutout at the Pirates in a 2-0 victory. DesRoches is 9-1 on the season with a 1.87 ERA that ranks him sixth in the country. He is 5-0 in the BIG EAST. Providence dropped the second game, losing 11-3 to the Pirates. On Sunday, JOSH BURNHAM (Sr., Tolland, Conn.) gave PC seven and 1/3 strong innings and ANDY SCOTT (So., Millville, N.J.) picked up his second save as he got the final five batters of the game. The hitting stars for the Friars were MIKE SCOTT (So., Darien, Conn.) and NEAL McCARTHY (Fr., Warwick, R.I.). Scott continued his run at Rookie of the Year honors as he went 5-for-6 with four runs scored. For Scott, it was his third-five hit game of the season. For the fourth time this season, he was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week. He set a BIG EAST single season record with five triples and his nine triples overall are a Providence College single season record. Scott is hitting .405 on the year with three homers and 44 rbi's. McCarthy was 4-5 in the game with four rbi's. The freshman outfielder is hitting .364 in his first season with ten home runs and 40 rbi's this year. PC plays a single game at Brown on Tuesday, a single game at Boston College on Wednesday and then a three-game series at Rutgers on Saturday and Sunday.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK... The men's track team scored 19 points and finished sixth of six teams at the UConn Spring Invitational III on April 17 at Storrs, Conn. Junior Keith Kelly (Drogheda, Ireland), senior Ben Noad (Bristol, England) and sophomore Ciaran Lynch (Limerick, Ireland) all ran strong for the Friars. Kelly finished third in the 1,500 meters (3:51.39) and Noad placed fourth (3:51.82). Both runners qualified for the IC4A Championship. Lynch finished third in the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:14.96.

MEN'S TENNIS (9-11 Spring, 9-12)... The men's tennis team registered a 1-3 mark last week. On April 14, Fairleigh Dickinson defeated PC, 4-3, at PC. Sophomore Chris Riccobono of Franklin Lakes, N.J. (No. 3 singles), senior Jon Moog of Williamsville, N.Y. (No. 4 singles) and senior John Poloski of Warwick, R.I. (No. 6 singles) all earned singles wins for the Friars. On April 15, the Boston College defeated the Friars, 4-3, at Chestnut Hill, Mass. Sophomore Keith Dressler of Cranston, R.I. (No. 2 singles) and Riccobono (No. 3 singles) both posted singles wins for PC. On April 18, St. John's earned a 5-2 win over the Friars. Riccobono and Poloski each posted singles wins for PC. On April 19, the Friars defeated Hartford, 5-2. Dressler, Riccobono, Moog and Poloski all earned singles wins.

WOMEN'S TENNIS (3-4 Spring, 12-6)... The women's tennis team recorded a 0-2 mark last week. Seton Hall defeated the Friars, 4-3, on April 17 at PC. Sophomore Alison Carton of Milburn, N.J. (No. 1 singles), freshman Brooke Rubin of Cranston, R.I. (No. 2 singles) and freshman Gina Vlasek of Atlanta, Ga. (No. 4 singles) each earned a singles win for PC. On April 18, St. John's earned a 5-4 win against the Friars. Rubin, junior Jesse LeMasters of Cincinnati, Ohio (No. 3 singles) and Vlasek all earned singles wins.

GOLF (1-1)...The Providence College golf team played started the week by winning the Rhode Island Division I Championship against Brown and the University of Rhode Island. PC turned in a 312 score, Brown had 325 and URI had a 334. JUSTIN MONAHAN (So., Worcester, Mass.) was the individual champion with a four-over par 76. BEN BRIDGEO (So., Southbridge, Mass.) was second with a 77. JOHN LOMBARDI (Sr., Warwick, R.I.) tied for fourth with a 79 while CHRIS HYNES (So., Warwick, R.I.) tied for seventh with an 80 and ROB BRENNAN (Sr., Springfield, Mass.) was tenth with an 82. On the weekend, the Friars participated in the URI Inivtational where they finished third among 15 teams. The Friars had a two-day total of 636 to trail tournament winner Rhode Island (608) by 28 strokes and second place Connecticut (629) by seven strokes. PC's top finishers were Bridgeo and Brennan who tied for ninth with 157 totals. Monahan tied for 17th with a 160 while Hynes was 26th with a 162 and Lombardi 30th with a 165.

The Friars play once this week as they play in the Big Five Tournament which will be held at Shuttlemeadow Country Club in New London, Connecticut on Friday, April 23rd.
