PROVIDENCE, R.I.– Providence College junior
Maeve O'Neill (Cork, Ireland) was named BIG EAST Women's Track Athlete of the Week, as announced Tuesday, Feb. 3. O'Neill earned the honor after winning her heat and placing sixth overall in the 800-meter invite in a program-record time of 2:01.96 at the Boston University Terrier Classic on Friday, Jan. 30.
O'Neill broke
Kimberley May's record of 2:04.47, which was set in 2024, and has now broken program records in the 600, 800 and 1,000 meters this season. Her time of 2:01.96 is the eighth fastest in the NCAA this season.
To open the season, O'Neill established the program record in the 600 meters at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, winning the event in 1:28.09 on Dec. 6. The junior followed with another program record on Jan. 17 at the Harvard Beantown Challenge, capturing the 1,000 meters in 2:41.07 to break Millie Paladino's 2019 mark of 2:42.13.
The Friars will return to action on Friday, Feb. 13-14 at the BU Valentine Invitational in Boston, Mass. and Saturday, Feb. 14 at the URI Coaches Invitational in Kingston, R.I.
