MILWUAKEE, Wis. – The Providence College volleyball team (9-5, 0-1 BIG EAST) was defeated in three sets (3-0) by Marquette (7-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) in their BIG EAST opener on Friday, Sept. 26.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Marquette earned a 25-10 victory in the first set.
- Marquette came out quick with a 7-1 lead, forcing a Providence timeout.
- The Friars took a second timeout after the Golden Eagles extended their lead to 15-3.
- A block by junior Lyric Berry (Wylie, Texas) and sophomore Sophia Adkins (Cincinnati, Ohio) narrowed Marquette's advantage to 21-8.
- Marquette maintained its lead to earn a 25-10 victory.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Marquette won the second set, 25-16.
- Providence took a timeout after Marquette jumped out to a 13-7 advantage.
- The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 21-15, forcing a second Friars timeout.
- Marquette went on a 4-1 run to win the set, 25-16.
- Adkins led the Friars with five kills through set two.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Marquette won the set, 25-21, and the match 3-0.
- The teams traded points early, tying the set at 9-9.
- Marquette went on a 3-0 run, forcing a Providence timeout (12-9).
- The Friars took a second timeout after the Golden Eagles extended their lead to 20-14.
- Berry and sophomore Audrey Kocon (Shoreview, Minn.) combined for a block forcing a Marquette timeout (21-18).
- Marquette maintained its lead to win the set 25-21, and the match 3-0.
MATCH NOTES:
- Adkins led the team in kills with nine.
- Berry recorded four blocks.
- Pride led the defense with 16 digs.
- The Friars notched 30 kills, six blocks and 33 digs.
