PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team was defeated, 4-3, in overtime by New Hampshire on Sunday, Sept. 14 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. It marked the Friars' first loss of the season as the team moved to 4-1 on the season. New Hampshire evened its record at 2-2.
GAME FLOW:
• The Friars jumped on the board just 1:11 into the game as
Carly van Benten one-timed a feed from
Ari Ftorek at the left post.
• Providence maintained its 1-0 lead at the conclusion of the of the first quarter.
• UNH tied the game, 1-1, at the 17:14 mark in the second quarter as Tasmin Cookman sent a crossing pass into the circle from the right baseline. Kathelijne Knuttel redirected the pass into the cage at the left post.
•
Bo Martina put Providence ahead, 2-1, at the 24:26 mark. She carried the ball roughly 30-yards into the top of the circle and ripped a back-handed shot by the UNH goalkeeper.
• UNH tied the game, 2-2, just moments later on a penalty corner. Marlijn Swaan scored on a direct shot, assisted by Addison MacNeil and Cookman. The goal came at 25:53.
• The game remained tied, 2-2, at halftime.
• At the half, Providence led in shots (6-5) and each team earned three corners.
• UNH took its first lead of the game (3-2) at 41:48. It was another direct shot from Swaan, assisted by MacNeil and Cookman.
• The Wildcats carried their one-goal lead into the final frame.
• The Friars answered on a penalty corner play at the 48:47 mark (3-3). After an initial deflection in the circle, Van Benten found
Florencia Talarico at the left post for the game-tying goal.
• Regulation ended in 3-3 tie and the two teams went to overtime.
• UNH scored the game-winner 52-seconds into overtime as Nicole Poulakis created a turnover and found Knuttel alone in the circle. Knuttel wrapped the ball around the Friars' goalkeeper
Ava Porter for the win.
NOTES:
• New Hampshire finished the match with a 16-14 advantage in shots and a 9-8 edge in penalty corners.
• Porter finished the game with eight saves in goal for Providence, while UNH's Abby Johnson collected six saves.
• The Friars lost for the first time this season and moved to 4-1 on the year, including a 1-1 mark in overtime games.
• Martina leads the Friars with four goals overall.
• Van Benten leads the team in scoring this season after her three-point performance against UNH (1 goal / 1 assist). She owns 10 points on two goals and a team-best six assists.
• Talarico picked up her first goal of the season
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will continue their seven-game home stand on Friday, Sept. 19 as they open BIG EAST Conference action against Old Dominion. The match is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Lennon Family Field and will be streamed on Friars Live.
