Smithfield, R.I.– The Providence College volleyball team was defeated by the University of Rhode Island in four sets (3-1) during Ocean State Cup action on Saturday, Sept. 7 in Smithfield R.I.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Rhode Island earned a 25-17 victory in the first set.
- The two teams went back-and-forth to open the match in a 4-4 tie.
- The Rams went a 7-3 run to claim an 11-7 advantage.
- Rhode Island was able to extend its lead to 19-13.
- The Rams maintained control and won the first set, 25-17.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the second set, 25-21.
- The Friars jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead and forced Rhode Island to call a timeout.
- Providence was able to extend its lead to 16-9.
- The Rams went on a 7-2 run to cut Providence's lead to 18-16.
- The two teams went back-and-forth, but Providence was able to hold off the Rams for a 25-21 win.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Rhode Island took the third set, 26-24.
- The Friars got off to a quick 6-1 advantage.
- Providence extended its lead to 14-7.
- The Friars went on a 5-2 run to take a 19-10 advantage.
- Rhode Island executed a 10-1 run to tie the set, 20-20.
- The two teams exchanged kills and kept the set tied at 24-24.
- Rhode Island completed the comeback and won the set 26-24.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Rhode Island won the fourth set, 25-23
, to win the match 3-1.
