PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College volleyball team will travel to Smithfield, R.I. to compete in the Ocean State Cup. The Friars open the tournament on Sept. 6 at 7:00 p.m. against Brown University. On Sept. 7, Providence will play two matches against University of Rhode Island at 10:00 a.m. and Bryant University at 7:00 p.m.
SCOUTING THE FRIARS… The Friars enter the tournament 1-1 after competing at the Puerto Rico Clásico last weekend (Aug. 31-Sept. 1). The Friars fell to the University of Iowa (1-3) and defeated the University of Evansville (3-0).
Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas) leads the Friars in kills, with 17. She is followed by
Sophia Adkins (Cincinnati, Ohio) and
Audrey Kocon (Shoreview, Minn.), who both tallied 14 kills in the Puerto Rico Clásico.
Jiji Lykins (Coral Springs, Fla.) is currently leading the team in digs with a total of 31, which ranks fourth in the BIG EAST. Additionally, she tops her team in service aces with six, which ranks second in the BIG EAST.
Kayla Grant (Rowlett, Texas) leads the team and ranks second in the BIG EAST with a hitting percentage of .524.
SCOUTING THE BEARS… The Bears open their 2024 season at the Ocean State Cup. Brown finished their 2023 season with a 19-7 overall record and a 9-5 mark in the Ivy League.
Bea Vanderlaan led the Bears with 246 kills and 99 blocks last season.
Jessie Golden registered a team high 446 digs in the 2023 season.
SCOUTING THE RAMS… The Rams enter the weekend with a 0-3 record after playing in the UNF Invitational. The Rams fell to Quinnipiac (2-3), North Florida (0-3) and Mercer (0-3).
Sophomore Madi Disu leads the team in kills (30) and service aces, with 5.
Junior setter Kiera McCarles averages 7.55 assists per set and leads the team in assists overall (83).
Senior Edi Lamoreaux leads the defense with 37 digs.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS… The Bulldogs enter the tournament with a 2-1 record after playing in the FAU Tournament. Bryant defeated Florida Atlantic (3-2) and Seton Hall (3-0) and fell to Ball State. (0-3).
Senior Aubrey LaPour leads the offense with 25 kills through the first three games followed by Fabi Castro (21).
Sophomore Carrina Barron leads the Bulldogs in digs, with 37.
WHATS NEXT… The Friars will return home to host the 19th Annual Friar Volleyball Classic on September 13-14. The tournament will consist of six matches over two days. The teams joining the Friars include Saint Peter's University, Columbia University and Stonehill College. Providence will play two matches to open the weekend on Friday, Sept. 13 against Saint Peters at 2:30 p.m. and Columbia at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday Sept. 14 the Friars face Stonehill at 11:00 a.m.
