Smithfield, R.I.– The Providence College volleyball team defeated Brown University in five sets (3-2) on Friday, September 6 in Smithfield R.I. to kick off the Ocean State Cup. The Friars dropped the first two sets of the match before staging an impressive comeback with victories in three-straight sets. Providence improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Bears opened their 2024 season with a loss (0-1).
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Brown earned a 25-17 victory in the first set.
- The Bears got out to a quick 8-3 lead.
- The Friars began to chip away, cutting Brown's lead to 11-7.
- Brown went on a 9-4 run to claim a 20-12 advantage.

FIFTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars won the fifth set, 15-13

- Brown jumped out to a 6-3 lead to start the deciding set.
- The Friars scored back-to-back points out of their time out to cut Browns lead to one (6-5).
- The two teams went back-and-forth to tie the set, 10-10.
- The Friars and Bears exchanged to find the set tied, 13-13.
- Providence got back-to-back kills from Macy Taylor to win the set 15-13 and claim the match, 3-2.
