Volleyball Defeats Brown University In Five Sets

The Friars face Rhode Island and Bryant on Sept. 7 at 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Smithfield, R.I.– The Providence College volleyball team defeated Brown University in five sets (3-2) on Friday, September 6 in Smithfield R.I. to kick off the Ocean State Cup. The Friars dropped the first two sets of the match before staging an impressive comeback with victories in three-straight sets. Providence improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Bears opened their 2024 season with a loss (0-1).
 
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Brown earned a 25-17 victory in the first set.
  • The Bears got out to a quick 8-3 lead. 
  • The Friars began to chip away, cutting Brown's lead to 11-7.
  • Brown went on a 9-4 run to claim a 20-12 advantage.  
  • Brown held on for a 25-17 victory.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Brown won the second set, 25-14.
  • The two teams went back-and-forth to reach a score of 5-5 to begin the second set.
  • The Bears went on a 4-1 scoring run to earn a 9-4 lead and forced the Friars to take a timeout.
  • Brown extended its lead to 16-9.
  • Providence narrowed Browns lead to make the score 19-14.
  • The Bears held on to win the set, 25-15.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence took the third set, 25-20.
  • The Friars and Bears played the first half of the set evenly to reach an 11-11 tie.
  • The Friars went on a 5-1 run to take a 16-12 advantage and forced Brown to take a time out.
  • Brown fought back to even the score, 18-18.
  • Providence went on a 7-2 run to win the third sent 25-20.
  • Kayla Grant led the Friars' offense with nine kills through three sets.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars won the fourth set, 25-23, to tie the match 2-2.  
  • The Bears jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead to start set four.
  • Providence went on a 13-4 run to take a 14-9 advantage.
  • The Friars extended their lead to 23-16.
  • Brown answered with a 5-0 run to tie the set, 23-23.
  • Providence held on to win the set 25-23 and tie the match 2-2.  
FIFTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars won the fifth set, 15-13, to win the match.
  • Brown jumped out to a 6-3 lead to start the deciding set.
  • The Friars scored back-to-back points out of their time out to cut Browns lead to one (6-5).
  • The two teams went back-and-forth to tie the set, 10-10.
  •  The Friars and Bears exchanged to find the set tied, 13-13.
  • Providence got back-to-back kills from Macy Taylor to win the set 15-13 and claim the match, 3-2.
MATCH NOTES:
  • Grant led the Friars with 11 kills and 4.5 blocks.
  • Audrey Kocon recorded 12 digs.
  • The Friars notched 54 kills, 49 digs and 11 blocks.

Brown University: 0-1
 
WHATS NEXT: The Friars have two matches tomorrow, Sept. 7. The first match is against Rhode Island at 10:00 a.m. and the second is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. versus Bryant.
