Volleyball Falls To Bryant University In Ocean State Cup

The Friars will return to action next weekend for the 19th annual Friar Volleyball classic.

Smithfield, R.I.– The Providence College volleyball team was defeated by Bryant University in four sets (3-1) on Saturday, September 7 in Smithfield R.I. to close out the Ocean State Cup.

FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Bryant earned a 25-21 victory in the first set.
  • The Friars jumped out to a 6-3 lead to start the match.
  • Bryant went on a 6-3 run to tie the match, 9-9.
  • The two teams traded points and kept the set tied at 17-17.
  • Bryant took a 23-20 advantage after going on a 6-3 run late in the set.
  • The Bulldogs were able to hold their lead and won the set ,25-21.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the second set, 25-18.
  • The Friars and Bulldogs played evenly at the start of the set and reached a 9-9 tie.
  • Providence went on a 3-0 run to take a 12-9 lead and forced Bryant to take a timeout.
  • Bryant was able to score four points coming out of its timeout, closing the gap to 15-13.
  • Providence responded by going on a 5-1 run to extend its lead to 20-14.
  • The Friars were able to hold the lead and win the set, 25-18.   
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Bryant took the third set, 25-23.
  • The Friars took a 4-2 lead to start set three.
  • The two teams traded points, tying the set at 12-12.
  • Providence went on a 4-1 run to take a 16-13 lead.  
  • The Bulldogs scored four  consecutive points to take a 17-16 advantage.
  • The Friars and Bulldogs exchanged kills, leveling the score at 20-20.
  • Bryant closed out the set with a 5-3 run, winning 25-23.
  • Jiji Lykins led the Friar's with 12 digs through the first three sets.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Bryant won the fourth set, 25-17, to win the match 3-1.
  • The two teams went back-and-forth to reach a score of 6-6 to begin the second set.
  • The Bulldogs went on a 7-2 run to gain a 13-8 lead, prompting Providence to call a timeout.
  • Bryant extended its lead to 20-10.
  • The Bulldogs maintained their lead to win the set 25-17 and the match 3-1.
MATCH NOTES:
  • Lyric Berry led the Friars with 10 kills.
  • Audrey Kocon recorded four blocks.
  • The Friars notched 37 kills, 49 digs and 10 blocks.

Bryant University: 5-2
 
WHATS NEXT: The Providence College volleyball team will be at home next weekend for the 19th annual Friar Volleyball Classic. The Friars will face off against Saint Peter's University Friday, Sept. 13 at 2:30 p.m. and Columbia University at 7:00 p.m. Providence will play Stonehill College on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 11:00 a.m. to close out the weekend.
