Volleyball Defeats Saint Peter’s To Open Up The 19th Annual Friar Classic

The Friars will return to action tonight against Columbia.

Providence, R.I. – Providence College volleyball defeated Saint Peter's in four sets to kick off the Annual Friar Classic on Friday, September 13 in Providence, R.I.
 
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Saint Peter's earned a 25-21 victory in the first set.
  • The Friars got off to a quick 5-2 start.
  • Saint Peter's fought back to tie the match 6-6.
  • Providence went on a 5-2 run to take an 11-8 advantage.
  • The Friars maintained their lead at 16-13.
  • The Peacocks went on a 3-0 rally to tie the set 16-16.  
  • Saint Peter's went on a 6-4 run to take a 22-20 lead, forcing Providence to take a timeout.
  • The Peacocks maintained their lead to win the set 25-21.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the second set, 25-18.
  • Providence went on a 6-3 run to begin set two.
  • Audrey Kocon had a block to give the Friars an 8-5 advantage.
  • The Peacocks fought back, narrowing Providence's lead to just one point (10-9).
  • Providence went on a 7-2 rally to claim a 17-11 advantage.
  • Saint Peter's went on a 4-1 run to cut Providence's lead to 18-15.
  • The Friars finished off the set with a 7-3 run to secure a 25-18 win.
  • Jiji Lykins led the Friars with 12 digs through two sets.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence took the third set, 25-18.
  • The Peacocks got out to a quick 6-1 lead, forcing Providence to take a timeout.
  • Coming out of the timeout Saint Peter's extended their lead 11-3.
  • The Friars went on a 9-1 run to tie the match 12-12 and forced Saint Peter's to call a timeout.
  • Providence went on an 8-2 run to take a 20-14 advantage.
  • The Friars were able to maintain their lead and win the set 25-18.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars won the fourth set, 28-26 to win the match, 3-1.
  • The Friars jumped out to a quick 6-3 lead to start set four.
  • Providence extended their lead to 12-6.
  • Saint Peter's answered with a 6-3 run to bring the score to 15-12.
  • The Friars went on a 5-3 run to extend their lead to 20-15.
  • The Peacocks went on a 9-1 run to take a 24-21 advantage.
  • The Friars went on a 7-5 run to win the set 28-26 and the match 3-1.
 
MATCH NOTES:
  • Shaliyah Rhoden led the Friars with 17 kills.
  • Lykins notched 18 digs for the Friars.
  • Kocon led Providence with six blocks and four aces.
  • The Friars notched 52 kills, 60 digs and 10 blocks.

WHATS NEXT:  The Friars will play again tonight at 7:00 p.m. against Columbia University. Providence will play one match tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. against Stonehill College to close the weekend.
