No. 14 Liberty Hangs On To Defeat Friars, 2-1

Hannah McKenney scored the lone goal for Providence.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team made a late push against No. 14 Liberty in BIG EAST play on Sept. 27 at Lennon Family Field, but fell to the Flames, 2-1. The Friars dropped to 5-4 on the season (1-1 BIG EAST), while the Flames improved to 5-3 overall (1-1 BIG EAST)
 
GAME FLOW:
• Liberty held a 2-0 lead at halftime courtesy of two first-quarter goals.
• Josefina Tomasi gave the Flames a 1-0 advantage just 1:35 into the game as she received a pass from Martu Cian and converted at the right post.
• Lou Combrinck scored the second goal off a fee from Ava Murphy. Murphy pass the ball up-field and Combrinck turned and fired for the score at 11:19.
• Liberty held a 4-0 edge in shots during the first half and neither team managed to earn a corner.
• The Friars earned the first penalty corner of the afternoon just 1:35 into the third quarter. Florencia Talarico's effort was blocked.
• At the conclusion of the third quarter it remained a 2-0 lead for Liberty. 
• The Flames outshot the Friars 4-2 in the third quarter; one of those shots hit the post and another ricocheted off the cross bar.
• The Friars cut the deficit to one (2-1) with 8:34 left in regulation as McKenney deflected a ball from Talarico into the cage.  
• Providence pulled its goalkeeper in favor of the extra attacker with 3:57 remaining.
• The Flames recorded three penalty corners and held them off the scoreboard despite playing without a goalie.
Ally Kennedy was credited with a defensive save during the stretch.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• McKenney has scored a goal in each of the Friars last two games.
• Talarico recorded her third assist of the season.
Asia Porter finished the game with two saves, while Liberty's Michaela Skinner recorded one save in the game.
• For the game, the Flames led in shots (10-4), shots on goal (5-2) and corners (3-2).
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Sunday, Sept. 29 against non-conference foe New Hampshire. The game will be played in Durham, N.H. and is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
