Friars Blank Quinnipiac In BIG EAST Opener

Bo Martina and Macie Pennisi each scored a goal; Asia Porter recorded her second shut-out victory of the season in the cage.

HAMDEN, CONN. – The Providence College field hockey team opened BIG EAST Conference play with a 2-0 victory over Quinnipiac on Sept. 20 in Hamden, Conn. Sophomores Bo Martina and Macie Pennisi each scored goals for the Friars, who improved to 4-3 overall on the year and 1-0 in the BIG EAST. Quinnipiac dropped to 2-5 overall (0-1 BIG EAST).
 
GAME FLOW:
• The first quarter ended in a scoreless draw.
• Quinnipiac thought it scored off a broken penalty-corner play with 6:00 remaining in the second quarter, but after a successful video review, the goal was called off.
• The two teams went into halftime tied, 0-0.
• Through the opening 30 minutes of play, the Friars led in shots (6-2) and shots on goal (4-1). The Bobcats held a 4-3 edge in penalty corners.
• Providence had two dangerous attempts in their offensive circle which came during a penalty corner. Florencia Talarico and Martina each recorded shots during the sequence, but they were turned away by Quinnipiac goalkeeper Cristina Torres.
• With 10:07 remaining in the third, the Bobcats drew a penalty corner, but another successful video review called by the Friars wiped out the corner and resulted in Quinnipiac possession outside the circle.
• With under four minutes to play in the third, Martina put a shot attempt on target, which was saved by Torres initially, but not successfully cleared out of danger. Martina's second effort found the back of the cage to give Providence a 1-0 lead.
• Providence outshot Quinnipiac 8-0 in the third quarter and held a 4-0 edge in offensive corners.
• Quinnipiac earned three-straight penalty corners with just under six minutes to play, but were unable to capitalize.
• The Bobcats pulled their goalkeeper in favor of an extra attacker with 5:00 left in regulation.
• Pennisi gave the Friars a 2-0 lead as she converted a penalty corner opportunity with less than a minute to play. The goal was assisted by Martina and Taylor Ligozio
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Martina recorded her third goal of the season and finished the day with three points on one goal and one assist. She has scored eight points in the last three games on three goals and two assists.
• Pennisi recorded her second goal of the season and has tallied five points in the last three games on two goals and one assist.
• Ligozio recorded her first collegiate point on her assist with 43-seconds to play in regulation.
• Porter recorded two saves in her second shut-out victory of the season.
• Torres collected seven saves for Quinnipiac and was charged with one goal against
• Providence outshot Quinnipiac 15-5, including a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. The Friars held a 8-7 edge in penalty corners.
• Providence improved to 9-4 all-time vs. Quinnipiac in a series that began in 2014.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Sunday, Sept. 22 against non-conference foe Holy Cross. The match will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the game, the program will honor its six seniors and five graduate students.
