Volleyball Defeats University of Evansville For First Win Of The Season

The Friars will return to action at the Rhode Island Tournament next weekend.

San Juan, Puerto Rico – The Providence College volleyball team defeated the University of Evansville in three sets at the Puerto Rico Clásico on Sunday, Sept. 1 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Friars return to action next weekend at the Rhode Island Challenge Tournament in Smithfield, R.I.
 
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence earned a 28-26 victory in the first set.
  • The Friars got off to a quick 3-0 start.
  • Evansville fought back to tie the match 6-6.
  • The Aces went on a 6-3 run to take a 12-9 lead, forcing Providence to take a timeout.
  • Evansville maintained a five-point lead at 17-12.
  • Providence went on a 7-2 scoring run to tie the set, 19-19.
  • The Aces went on a 3-0 rally to claim a 22-19 advantage.
  • The Friars finished off the set with a 9-4 run to secure a 28-26 win.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the second set, 25-15.
  • The Friars got off to a quick 6-3 start.
  • Providence extended its lead to 10-4.
  • Evansville chipped away at Providence's lead to make the score 10-7.
  • The Friars went on a 6-1 run to extend their lead to 16-8, resulting in an Evansville timeout.
  • Providence maintained its lead the remainder of the set to win 25-15.
  • Kayla Grant recorded 4 aces and 7 kills in the first two sets.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence took the third set, 25-20, to win the match in straight sets.
  • The two teams went back-and-forth to reach a score of 7-7 to begin the third set.
  • The Aces went on a 5-2 scoring run to bring the score to 12-9, and forced the Friars to take a timeout.
  • The Friars closed the gap to 15-14 out of the timeout.
  • Providence went on a 6-2 run to take the lead (20-17).
  • The Friars held on to win the set 25-20 and win the match 3-0.   
MATCH NOTES:
  • Grant led the Friars with 15.5 points, 10 kills and 3 blocks.
  • Miller McDonald and Macy Taylor led the Friars with 11 digs each.
  • The Friars notched 50 kills, 51 digs and 7 blocks.

University of Evansville: 1-2
 
WHATS NEXT:  The Providence College volleyball team will be on the road again next weekend for the Rhode Island Challenge Tournament in Smithfield, R.I. The Friars will face off against Brown University Friday, Sept. 6 at 7:00 p.m. Providence will play the University of Rhode Island on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 10:00 a.m. and Bryant University at 7:00 p.m.
